After being housebound for over a week, I took my girl out for a walk in an area I don't usually go.  As we went by a house I heard several dogs barking from behind the block wall. (Everyone has block walls here-snakes) A woman came out of the house and commented on my girl being so nice (natch).  She then asked if I wanted to see her dog. I really didn't but she seemed really nice and I looked through the gate. She had the honest to God biggest freakin' GSD I have ever seen.  His head was as high as my hip and as big as one of the Kennedys.  He was massive, black and totally scruffy. There was a black and tan bitch, obviously young and fine boned. And you guessed it, three pups.

Turns out the bitch was 8 months old when impregnated. I asked if she intended on spaying one or both and she said she wouldn't want to deny her the chance to be a mommy. I kid you not, the chance to be a mommy.  I  asked about hips/elbows, she didn't see the need because what would happen would happen anyway and you couldn't change it by knowing it.  She then told me I could use her dog for a stud if I gave her one of the male pups.  I declined in no uncertain terms.

I know these things happen all the time. I read the posts here (one very similar just recently) but for some reason it just really hit home looking at the dynamic right in front of me.  It's depressing. Just really depressing.

This woman didn't even have a clue that you should give pups shots, wormer, vet checks.  You see, you don't need all those things if your dogs spend their whole life in your backyard.  She truley believed this. But, she said maybe "next time" she would think about it.

God, it makes me so angry.

And in a few months when you walk by there again, all the female puppies you saw today will have puppies of their own. Yes, it's enough to make a GSD lover very angry. At least you did try, good for you.

Sadly this is no surprise. Read the newspapers ads and you can see this all the time. We even have people selling dogs here that are right in line with this type of person.

How the hell do you lay your head on a pillow and sleep at night when you pull this kind of horse shit?  How do you look into the eyes of souls you bring into this world and not SEE them? No different than a couch or a car?

At first I was enraged. Now I'm just depressed.

AATD, how do people give birth themselves and then neglect, injure, starve, beat and kill--or allow their boyfriend or husbands to do so--the very beings they actually produced from their own bodies, and still sleep at night? As a species, too many of our ilk are extremely shallow and selfish, that's how...

Welcome to my world, Every single day at the shelter I have such morons coming in to give me 8 puppies the mom dog and a larger pup one of the "survivors" of the previous litter. Gawd, if that gal had said one wrong word I would have tackled her through the front door onto the gravel parking lot and let her have it. That was today. She too had no clue about vaccines and thought it was ok for this poor little mom dog to just continue to be bred and bred and bred and bred, She thought "nature" would take care of itself, and even said well some of the pups from the last litter died off, it's just nature. Yes we get furious and disgusted and depressed, But in the end all we can do is what we can do, and no more and no less. Keep your chin up and continue to do your best to instill what knowledge you can, if they listen you have made great progress, If they don't they never will and hopefully "nature" will soon take care of them. Hats off to ya for making the effort !!!!

There are many days of the week where I cannot answer the phone unless my answering machine screens the call, or cannot look at another email from someone wanting to dump their GSD for the most lame ass reasons you can imagine. And then, on the other days, I almost cannot stay civil when some idiot asks me if I would let one of my dogs mate with his female who has not met the most basic health requirement, let alone ever been evaluated for an ability to work or for good temperament or structure. The last such person I turned down just took his female down to the mutt lab down the street. It is depressing. And so I have to do other things to keep this in perspective.

That is horrible...what is really sad is there is an all dog board that always has people on there who have had "accidental" litters. Most come on there whining because the puppies are all dying and "I can't afford to take the to the vet"!!! They don't give them shots, vet them and cannot afford emergencies....the last one that got to me is the WHOLE litter died one by one. They started out fat and sassy, and declined and this person didn't do anything about it-then has the gall to cry about it! She even went so far as showing her son (around 7 yrs.) holding the dying pup. I cannot even look at that board anymore. You can't get on someone there about that crap or you get banned....it makes me soooooo sick. Ok sorry, did not mean to hijack this thread...I can just relate to how you feel about it.

I watched "BORN FREE" again (umpteenth time) last evening and I am at peace! Some animal stories are just that special! The more I see of people the more I love my dogs. Morgan

Dawgs, part of me wonders why you even care about what you saw or would trouble yourself to make any comments to the woman who owned the dogs, as anything you said to her fell on ears that could not, and would not ever understand. But, I know that it would bother the hell out of me as well, and I would probably do the same thing. Bob-O
