So...we have a mite issue. We thought our dogS had flees and was treating our house, yard, and dogs excessivley and it wasn't going away (we even spent the money to change our carpets). So we finally took them to the vet where they were diagnosed with mites. Dang it...they gave them a one time treatment and said that it should go away in two weeks...now we live in a small town, so you get what you get....they also said it can't be transfered to humans...until we had it figured out our dogs have been sleeping in the laundry room since we just purchased new carpet...now since the vet said that it can't be transfered to humans we let the dogs in the house. Two weeks later..my oldest son (who is best friends with our little rat terrior and slept on his bed at night)... has a bad rash :( He has a doctor appointment on Wednesday....
I have demodex shampoo (on the way in the mail), essential oils, cleaned the sheets, vacuum...bio spot, DE you name it....I just called the vet and they want another 180 to treat the dogs...is there a way I can treat them at home, that is a little more cost effective?

Thank you Jyl!
I have read the first one and tried to get those meds through 1800 PetMeds...unfortanatley you have to have your vet approve, which they won't...makes sense, they can't make money that way and I'm no vet.... The e-how though was helpful....I'm not too familiar with mites....The e-how was very helpful on what else I should purchase...has anyone tried any of these on their shepherd? It seems like a lot of chemicals....
Pyrethrin Shampoo-This looks like the same stuff I purchased for the dogs when I was trying to combat what I thought were fleas...do mites build up resistance?
Sulfur Dip-I'm hoping the Demodex shampoo has this in it as I have read sulfur kills mites.
Fipronil Spray-I need to look more into this one.
Ivermectin-I have read a little bit about it on here...I can purchase it on Amazon without a prescription, however there are a lot of warning signs on it with hearding dogs and I'm a little fuzzy on dosage. Can this be used for my Shepherd?

You can get a "Fipronil" spray at Petco or PetSmart. Fipronil is the active ingredient in Frontline.
Ivermectin is use on German Shepherds all the time. I personally use Heartgard as a heartworm preventative and the active ingredient is Ivermectin. I am sure someone on here can give you the dosage, or you can do a search on this forum as I believe it is on here somewhere.
I personally order stuff from Revival Pet. They are much better to deal with.
Here is a shampoo from Revival Pet.com that will help with mites...

Flea dip will kill the mites on the dog, but you still need to treat the environment. You should repeat the treatments after a few weeks pass to kill the hatching eggs even if you don't see anymore. If you use a paper vacuum bag, burn it after you've vacuumed the carpet. Don't let it sit around. If you're using a fabric bag, put mothballs in it and empty the bag as soon as you've vacuumed the carpet; burn the contents. You can buy lyme sulfur dip at a garden supply store. It will kill the mites, but it smells like rotten eggs. Good luck.
