A warning to all that deal with this kennel they took my puppy deposit,I didnt get a pup and didnt get my deposit returned,it been almost 4 months now since they claimed they planned on returning it back to me. I called and sent several emails to remind them,my advice run far and fast from this kennel.

Why did you not get a puppy? Was it their decision or yours?

I did not get a pup for several reasons, one was it doesnt matter what order you get the deposit in with them, which I only found out after Carol cashed my check, then it snow- balled from bad to worse after that, then Carol said the litter had double dew claws in the litter a few weeks after they were born and she claimed refunds would be offered back on puppy deposits which never happened in my case or I wouldnt be posting about it now, seems odd that a breeder does not check for rear dew claws when pups a few days old to get them taken off and let the puppy buyers know about it,she only sent me two vids on the litter once at a few  days old which of coarse doesnt show much and once at 6 weeks old a very poor quality vid but I could tell the temperaments looked very poor, she took it upon herself to move me to a pick of a very low drive pup in the litter and said she didnt have the type of working drive that I was looking for and I agreed and she said my deposit would be returned but it never was only more lies and check is in the mail type of thing, one excuse after another in other words.

I'm just curious on this (nothing to do with Watcher Engel)...what's the problem with rear dewclaws? I don't understand why that's a "refund worthy" thing. I've had rear dewclaws in 2 litters. Rear dewclaws are not "double dewclaws," BTW. Double dews are something entirely different.

I'm not getting in the middle of a situation I know nothing about - I was only curious about dew claws because of the way you phrased it. My initial question was because 99% of breeders don't refund deposits unless they can't provide a pup after transferring one time to another litter. Hard to find a breeder who actually refunds the deposit if you choose not to accept the pup they choose for you, hence my question. Sorry you're having this experience.

Sorry to hear about your troubles... hope everything gets resolved.

On another note...Isnt this (Watcher Engel K9) the same person that changed several of the pedigrees of Pirates Lair's dogs a little while ago?? I know there was a post on PDB about it  a little while ago.

mebbe we should have a dewclaws thread, i have a 2yo not gsd with reaar dewclaws, doesn't seem to bother the dog, i wrap them sometimes if out hunting so they don't get caught on anything. is it too late to have a vet remove them, will it cause any drama if i leave them on?

op sorry about yr dramas, i lost a deposit as well.

vk, at this point, I'd leave them alone. Worst case is they do get caught and then you can remove them. If they don't, well, then you don't have to. Either way it's the same surgery so you might as well err on the side of "it'll probably be fine." :)  I don't think wrapping them is a bad idea, either.

just that someone told me it can make a dog kinda splay when they walk if they ever had them hooked on each other before and felt it, which can impact on joints later???

does this sound reasonable.

i will say that the only one dew claw issue i have ever had is a normal size front dew claw on my female, she came home with it dangling on a flap of skin, yikes, always had kept her nails trimmed as well, just stuff happens i think, she was a tree climber tho, guessing it was that.

vk4gsd, the only trouble with letting the rear dewclaws be is that should they get caught on something in the brush and get torn away from the leg, the resulting wound will bleed like an stuck pig, and it's hell trying to get it to stop. Not something you want to have to contend with if you're a long ways from a vet who can stitch the whole affair back together. Thumbs Down

If you're wrapping the hind dews so they can't catch on anything, that's sufficient, though, so as long as you always remember to do that before you send them out afield there shouldn't be a problem.

[This doesn't apply if the dog is of a breed that has functional hind dewclaws, like the Lundehund [Puffin Dog], which uses them for climbing--but for most dogs, the hind dews are only attached to the legs with skin, blood vessels and connective tissue without any muscle or tendon involvement.]

well I would be lying if I said I wrap them every time, you know how it is sometimes yr out in the truck and things just happen all of a sudden. I carry a staple gun in a bum-bag tho.

I think when vax & heart worm is next due I will get the dew claws removed, just safer, the vet is a major issue for this dog and he aint an easily handled puppy no more so might as well sedate him and get it all done at once.
