So no seniors on Orijen? 6 Fish??

My 8 years old GSD is on Orijen Adult dog and he is doing great. He used to have yeast infection very often, after switching to Orijen for the last couple years, his skin condition improved and and his fur looks a lot shinner. With advances in age and his activities level reduces, I am thinking of switching to a kibble that is lower in protein, but not sure what is best for him and I do not want the skin problem to return.

I had my senior (passed away in June) on it for four years. She did great, kept her weight and energy up. Her coat was thick and soft. Never any issues with yeasty ears. or the other things you listed. I really liked the Glucosamine and Chondrotin levels of the senior also.
I rotate my younger dogs through Oijen Six fish, Acana Grasslands and Orjien Adult. I like to mix up the foods, they seem to really enjoy it
Honesty, I've NEVER had any issues with any Orijen or Acana food products. Plus the multiple bag buy program helps take some of the sticker shock away.

We had our male on orijen six fish for many years untill his death at eleven. He had IBD and the six fish worked for him, Naver had any issues. Our female is alomost eight and she has eaten orjen six fish and regional red for most of her life.

I would really watch the water intake of any dog, senior particularly, on Orijen. I add water to my dogs' food for this reason. High protein doesn't harm organs, but chronic, mild dehydration does and protein takes more water to process than sodium, IIRC. Thus, you MUST ensure proper hydration or you're likely doing more harm than good.

We have a 9yo Great Dane (very, very old for a Dane) , she has decided that she will only eat Purina Pro......She still runs and plays with the shepherds.
Our 20yo cat will only eat Meow Mix and butter, she is amazingly young for her age.
I'm not sure super high nutrition for older animals is what they need or want.

Agree Sitasmom have read both; high protein helps to keep lean muscle mass; also high protein for seniors can cause early kidney issues, blah, blah, blah... The truth of the matter is that they don't know, that is why I thought I would put this up on forum to see what kind of luck everyone is having.
Personally am thinking the protein is too high but if the dog assimilates it properly even at an older age then it is working for that animal, they are all so different. Am trying to simplify my feeding program yet still reach optimal health needs. One sure does not fit all.
Thx NAn

High protein, again, needs a lot of WATER- it's dehydration that causes organ failure, not protein! Please, if you don't believe me, google the Dr. Becker vid about it.

-Agree Jenni; so with your Orijen fed dogs do you float the kibble or soak it; how much does it swell also is one of my concerns. Thx Nan
PS: will look up Dr. Beckers video, love her stuff; also good info on fistulas... N
