What are the basics and limitations on keeping expecting mothers fit?
by DKiah on 12 February 2007 - 23:02
Our breeding females are retired from working but are accustomed to taking hikes and walks and playing with their toys and pretty normal activity.
They should be active all the way thru as much as their excess weight will allow but our current mom was playing ball the morning she whelped!!
I would also say that most working line females are ready to get outta the box and go exercise by the 2nd day after birth!!
Gimme the toy and lets go run!! Kiva has had an exercise session every morning and looks forward to it!!

Does anyone continue to track for the first few weeks?I don't want to stop all training immediately.I might lose my mind. She might too.

I don't think it would be necessary to stop non-ballistic activity.. I would certainly track (my dog has an injury currently but we are still tracking) and even continue obedience.. keeping the jumping and incline wall out of it....
Sort of the same as what we ourselves would do.. just because you're pregnant... doesn't mean you move to the couch and dive into the bonbons - or does it, lol!! - activity will be better for all involved and will keep her in good shape if she already is..

I whelped a good size litter yesterday. We ran 3-4 miles on Saturday, 3-4 miles yesterday after whelping, only one mile so far today because I have been busy, but we're going out after the pups finish nursing for another mile and a half. It all depends on the dog. My bitch loves nothing more than gaiting. Carrying 8 pups
she had the biggest belly I have ever seen on a pregnant bitch, but kept up the pace rather easily. Without the baggage she blows me off the track, and keeps going after I am ready to walk home. Your bitch probably knows what is comfortable for her. As long as you don't push her to do more or anything dangerous (wall or hurdles) she should be fine. Best Wishes, Jonah

Yes on the working line bitch getting right up the next day and ready to run, fetch and walk anywhere anyhow....cant stop them they love it....have a hard time slowing them down....Pepsii runs over the pups to get out of the box ready for the go,but also concerned to get right back to the pups...she is an excellent whelper and mom.......healthy pups and they all act like her......a handful.....
