Is it mostly bullshit that the GSD have lost a bit of it¿s sutiability for real life work due to generations of breeding for competion in SCH/IPO? Have it become to specilaized for competition only, or what dogs/lines do you feel are more breed for police, army,SAR and such?
I don't think it's so much any certain lines as it is the training and the particular dog. I would rather look at the individual dog and go by their ability to work than by what's on paper.
LEO, Military, SAR people don't even care about the paper side or the breeding, they just want a dog that can work.
The Czech Border patrol lines I've dealt with have consistantly produced impressive natural aggression and fight drive. Without training.
i like the Tiekerhook lines for aggression. but there are still alot of people breeding for aggession. i belive a lot of the gsd's still can do the "real" so called work. most of it is like neuen-polizei said is training. and if your in the sport why train that way it equals more insurance not more points. most of the cop dogs and military dogs are not extreme man eating dogs. from what i have seen they are mostly just O.K. to good dogs. the really super good dogs are rare in any type of work or sport.
yea working dawg, I have a Tiekerhook and a Korbelbach son of a gun, working fools....thats all they live to do...and hard as nails and produce the same.....Orthos is the Grandfather of the one I have left and was father of Gator my apprehension K=9 Galveston Sheriff..Dept...Texas.....gsd,,,,,miss him hes at the rainbow bridge waiting......
surprisingly enough, they both are friendly and love people but say the word and they go to work and forget they even like people...I at one time thought Austin would never protect me...its the training correctly that gets the work out of them,,,,,,Austin has ripped my sons back wide open and legs arms and others by mistakes on his part and he is not a HOT or even does the sport but Austin traveled all over usa with him on his job and he demoed him to people and when he worked him he got careless and u dont do that with a Tiekerhook mouth and drive......
My Czech/DDR lines have been placed in Service Work for the handicap!!! I actually had some idiot tell me that you could never train those lines to do that kind of work! LOL Well, I have the pics/video to prove that you can. By the age of 7 mo, our litttle girl was guiding my daughter through traffic (people and streets), retreiving items dropped, leading to items she needed, and by 9 mo, alerted to a "blackout" with NO training!!! And I have 2 5mo old with same lines doing the same things now.
My Czech /DDR East Geman Working lines Consistantly produce all types of service dogs there is a great consistency with our program. Everything has the ability to be super workers and super lovers. My male Lion http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/493843.html is A dual Purpose Executive Protection Green Narcotics Service Dog He IS out Of Aik Adelmanns Felder Land
My Female Nikki Is a full czech bitch http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/pedigree/494559.html she is tough as nails lives in my house does therapy service at the hospice and senior homes she is a Personal Protection Level @ Explosive certified bitch who aquired her service status for therapy, PTSD and Explosive Work
Socialization Socialization Socialization is crutial, obvious excellent genetics plays a part but there are things these dogs must adapt to.
This Combination between Nikki And Lion Out Produce themselves tempermantly i have repeated there breeding three times and a half of all the litters have been purchased for some kind of service work and the rest pretty much are being worked in full executive protection, aprhension, building searches repelling deployment from and to moving vehicle etc. these lines of east DDR and Czech no doubtly have the good solid nerve and foundation that i look for
All IMO of Course
But AGAIS Socialize the hell out of your dog it creates enviormental accomplishment, strength, agility threat non threat and the confidence and the bond for you and your canine companion to have a beautiful working career together

Ok, but isn¿t there a chance of getting less dogs suited for service when the breedings are dictated so much for competition? And I¿m not talking about aggression only, how much aggression really is needed for the average PSD is another topic of discussion maybe, but things like stable in different environments and endurance/concentration to be able to track/search for very long time is nothing that that is tested on the SCH-field, right?
Problems working in different environmnets like slick floors, darkness, stairs and such is something that is more common in strictly sportlines, if we should make generalizations, a K9 officer once told me who have tested alot of dogs for service.
