I bought a puppy in July2006.She was 3 months at the time. The breeder said that the breeding took place in Germany and it will take some time to get my pups AKC registered. It is now 7 months later and still no papers. The breeder said it is a long process and will take more months still. What is this?Am I being taken?I thought this was a very well known breeder.I think he is giving me the run-around.

ask the breeder what is holding up the papers? here are steps to do the litter registration 1. import bred female then register female - must have SV transfer and do DNA 2. when AKC papers on female are done - register litter with app from akc website for foreign sired litters - signatures or stud certificate from foreign country required 3. If male has other litters here - DNA is probably required for litter registration - ask if sire is alive and in the same hands as when the breeding was done. this may be problem otherwise. If he went to china without dna done for AKC for example, it is not impossible, but will probably take a long time for all concerned to do adn sign off on everything If all paperwork came with female and all is in order should nto take that long to do any of this. If paperwork is not done correctly can be nightmaer Easy enough steps to outline. Time consuming sometimes.

I bought three seperate pups and none of them took that long. Born in Germany, purchased in the U.S. It took four months to obtain the paperwork from Germany and then to obtain AKC registration. So, IMO, something is not going right.

P.S., my pups were three months old also, when purchased.

It depends on what paperwork was already in order at the time of mating in Germany. It can take a long time to get paperwork, especially if the dogs were mated outside the United States. For example, I imported three pups last May who were born in February 2006. I just received their official papers from the kennel club in the Netherlands about one month ago. Once you have the necessary paperwork to submit to AKC, again, depending on the dogs and how complete the paperwork is, it can take as little as three weeks or way many more months to get the AKC registration. The important thing is to talk to the breeder so you understand exactly what the hold up is and keep informed on the progress. Clearly, one also would hope that the breeder is reputable. Many are, but there are some who are not.

Do right, it takes much longer to register pups bred in Germany born in the USA than pups bred/born in Germany and then imported. It took me 8 months once to register such pups, but there were some issues with the mother's papers that I had to resolve first (one of the previous owners didn't sign the pedigree, so I had to send it back to Germany), but then everything fall into place. So I would assume, there is something holding the process for the breeder, and if it's fixable, the papers will we ready soon. Just get yourself familiar with the process, and then ask the breeder what the hold up is. This should give you the peace of mind.

If the pup was bred and born in Germany you will need to get from the breeder an AKC Bescheinigung. This when submitted to the SV in Germany will you receive the paper work for the AKC reg. Contact Sabine at the SV, cotact info is on the web site. This process DOES sometimes take up to 1year. Good luck

Makosh: I defer to your experience with that procedure as I have not been involved in that particular type of situation. You did however state that your mentioned pups had a situation different because of failure by a previous owner. How long has it taken for this procedure when there were no mis-handlings of paperwork by previous owners? Just curious :)

It takes longer now. YOu must do things sequentially: Register the bitch, then get the DNA processed, then send in the paperwork to register the litter. YOu used to be able to do it all at once with no wait for DNA. I do think seven months is excessively long, but if paperwork gets lost enroute by the US mail or gets lost by the AKC(raising my hand, yup, happened to me)then you have to RE-DO it all again! If the female is hard to take pictures of for registration and it's hard to get someone to help take pictures (raising my hand again) that delays things too. My C litter was almost five months old before I got the registration to the owners.

I have imported dogs from Germany and the most recent being this past fall. It has not taken more than 8 weeks to get the papers back. Although, the breeder says that it is ALOT of paperwork and if they are a busy breeder it just may take them more time to get the papers done to send in?
