WOW, trying to travel with a pet on an airlines is a pain.

For those of you who travel to different shows, how do you do it? Do you generally drive and if it is too far, just not go? If you fly, any recommended airlines (within US) or tricks of the trade? Maybe a train (like AMTRAC) or a bus (like Grayhound) is better?

I would like to attend an Agility show in AZ this December. Based on where I live, driving is not the preferred way, as it is a day's drive just to get accross Texas.

Driving...
made several roadtrips through the States with beloved friends - memories I´ll never forget.

I have had freinds fly all over the US and intercontinental to: Germany, France and Itally, with their dog sitting at their feet. They call their dogs, 'Therapy' dogs. What Agility show are you wanting to attend?

That´s no good idea, Cutaway. There are "real" therapy dogs out there, it´s difficult enough for their owners without the scammers.

Driving would not be so bad, I would just have to take more time off from work.  Not sure if I can justify it, since this is all fun and games for me (no real need to compete or get titles).  The one time Texas being so big and me living in the North East corner is a pain in the rump.  Wink Smile

CPE one in Tucsan on 12/5.

Additionally, with the airlines in US, you have to provide medical proof of Service Dog.  Although, I use 2 of my dogs as mobility support, there are no official medical forms stating that I need a service animal.   My agility dog has no mobility training, so, other than being a well mannered dog, there is nothing I can show for her to be a service dog (unless jumping over a bar and going through tunnels count. :-)  )

I just drive.  I've done some events several states away, 9-10 hour drives.  I have a minivan that is basically dog crates and all my dog gear.  I often carpool with a friend and if we're broke, we share a hotel room as well.  A bus or train is not going to work.

Driving to Tucsan is about an 17 - 18 hour drive for me.  Cirberus travels well, but I think that would push it.  Not to mention, that is a long drive for me, even with lots of caffine and loud music.  Teeth Smile

I was always curious how people with brachiocephalic dogs (bigger than a 10 pounds) travel to shows/competitions, as their dogs aren't even allowed on planes at all...

Hi Fawndallas,

I run just for fun as well.  I haven't traveled more than 3-4 hours to run with my dog.  If you expand your venues to include CPE and NADAC trials, you would have more trials in your area.
