Hello! I came across reviews for 4 Health dog food last night and one review claims, that flax seed given to dogs/a bitch causes infertility! I have been feeding my dogs this brand (4 health) for a few years, and it does have flax seed in it....has anyone heard of this claim? If Put on another brand, will they regain fertility if was lost due to the flax seed and if so, how long might it take to recover?

It is a pseudo estrogen. I have read that too. How to know how much is too much is the question if this is true.

I had a problem with a bitch getting pregnant about 6 years ago - in speaking with a friend/fellow breeder, she mentioned that Cornell U. had recently done a study on the effects of flax seed on breeding dogs, and that they had used Newfies from a nearby kennel for their study. The kennel had several bitches that they could not get pregnant. They switched the dogs off of food with flax in it, and all the bitches got pregnant on the next attempt.

My bitch was young and healthy, I was trying to breed to a proven youngish male, so I figured - worth a try.  Got my girl off of flax seed and got her pregnant next heat.  Only change I made and she got pregnant every other subsequent  breeding.  Not sure if coincidence, bad timing first 2 tries or what - but I have since kept my breeding dogs off any food with flax.  Problem is it is in so many foods but for me has been worth it. I have been breeding for GSDs for 30 yrs now and quite sure I fed flax many times in the past - but for my more recent experience I decided was worth keeping them off it.  And yes, it is a psuedo estrogen so perhaps it throws off the balance of their natural homones.  Maybe they put much more flax in than in years past, I don't know.

I currently feed a combination of raw diet and Earthborn Holistic Primitive Natural kibble.
