I have a GSD, 1 year old and he's amazing. I would like to know what's the best way to get him started with showing/conformation. I found an AKC group not too far from us, would that be where we get started?

Absolutely, Try to find any AKC or Breed Clubs near you and go to these to start learning. With conformation showing these classes are most often free and you can also watch others before joining in if you wish. Your dog will learn how to behave well with many other people and dogs around.
