CMills

Hello all!  I am contemplating purchasing a new dog, and would like some of your opinions please!  He is a West German Showline, turned 8 months old 3 days ago, and is currently

63cm/34kg (75#) at this age. I was wondering if this is "standard size" for a male of his age. I'd like some other opinions before I proceed or make my final decision. Also, at this current

height/weight, what would you all expect him to be at full maturity?  Thanks in advance!

If you have seen this dog and actually put your hands on him and he is very very lean and well muscled I would say he is probably going to be a 90 LB'er.  Just guessing really need to know lineage though does make a difference and whether he is on a raw diet or kibble also can make a difference in growth.  But my boy at 8 1/2 months was 79.5 lbs.  Now at almost 13 months is 90 + and is on raw diet, well muscled and lean but not immanciated and is still filling out.  SOOOooo, with that in mind sounds like he's going to be on the larger side of the spectrum.  Personally I prefer about 75 lbs to maybe 85 lbs.  Think the bigger they get the less agile they are.  JMO though, nothing really to back that up historically but past experience in another breed.  My larger boys did not really hold up structurally as well as the compact guys.  Good luck  Any pic's??  Nan

PS:  I do not have access to a wicket but maybe my trainer does.  Will try to get his height for you though,  very tall and lancky.

I think this is normal - my showline male was close to these states at 8 months too, although I thought he might exceed 65cm at adulthood but still measured within the standered by SV judge Rainer Mast and he called him the dog on the 'upper limit for size'.  Experienced people will soon Chime in...

Good day CMills...

My 8 month old is 44 lbs so on the smaller size (but he's not short, SV judge called him "upper medium" sized) and my 5 year old full WGSL male who is V rated, UKC CH and KKL1 is 70lbs (most people guess he weighs 80-90lbs looking at photos though, he's not too small and he's not fine or bitchy).

Well I'm a bit disappointed that this thread has been read almost 300 times, yet only 3 kind people have taken their time to give their replies/opinions! But thanks to you 3 that did! Would really appreciate more comments please!

Hi there,

Your new dog prospect has still some room for growth - 4 to 6 months. If at 8 months he is at 63cm there is a quite high chance that he will be over 66 cm by 12 months. However, everything depends on genetics. What is his pedigree like?

Withouth knowing pedigree details, I personally feel that this dog will be somwhere around 67cm and 90 pounds by 18 month of age....again this is just my personal feeling and pure guess.

My dog 2.5 years old is 63-64cm and 79 pounds - WGSL

A lot of room for speculations, sorry.
I guess he´ll become a big boy, but who knows for sure?!?

Is he x-rayed in front and rear? This would be my biggest concern at this age.
Kind regards

Agreed, khalid!  this is pitiful, over 400 reads yet less than 10 replies??  Geez!!!   I sometimes think if you're not one of the "big-wigs" on here they ignore you!

Anyway, I'm not so sure how much genetics plays in growth, my old Czech stud was 80# at this heaviest, yet produced 100#'ers consistently, and yet my oversized showline stud has yet to produce anything over 90#!
