OK this is off topic, But I am in a real Moral battle here. A female Pit Bull was found at the local Video store, Friendly as can be a very sweet dog BUT she has just had pups I guess around 10 days ago or so. I take the dog while I ponder what to do ? She is very thin, But she's been nursed not terribly long ago, so at least some of the pups are surviving we know. I put up flyers in the neighborhood where she was found, and have heard nothing, This will be night 2 the pups are on they're own. I don't know what to do, I tried taking her out on leash and having her take us to the pups. But no go, she seems lost, funny thing is, I took her back to where I picked her up from. Do I turn her loose and run the risk of her being hit by a car or starving to death somewhere ?? Or do I hold on to her and hope the pups slip away quietly and as painlessly as possible. I am so torn, I have been in tears all day, I don't know what to do, We have the authorities all out looking for any info, we hit the newspapers, and the radio stations, the local skate park, (near where we found her) The post office, and postal carriers, and the city workers as well. I don't know what else to do, and I know these puppies are slipping away and right now I feel I am the cause of it. What would you do ???

Someone also may have dumped her. There is no guarantee if you just let her go, and she could get to the puppies, that they would live. They could already be dead. There isn't an easy answer. If you take care of mom then at least she has a good chance. Good Luck!

I would get a couple of spry young men (16 to 18), pay them a few bucks and turn her loose where I found her. They could follow her about anywhere (in the daylight), and you will find the pups, if they are out there. If she does not go to them within one hour, then they are lost and you need to pick her up again, and do the right thing with her. I will mention something that happened to me last summer. I had something eating my chickens which I kept at a different location than where my dogs are kept, on my ten acres. I bought a large, live catch trap and put dog food in it. Low and behold, I caught a starving Pit Bull adult female. She turned out to be a real sweetheart. However, after I "adopted" her (I named her Lucy), she was kennel kept and got out of her kennel by literally ripping the kennel fencing open with her teeth, and she went after my female Bull Mastiff x Boxer cross, who is an old dog. Lucy just about killed my oldest dog. My old dog was tough but Lucy was REAL tough, and low to the ground. It took everything I had (water hose, sticks and bites to me in the fracas) to get them apart. The local shelter refused her as they were full. I posted signs and put an ad in the local paper to find her original owner but no response. I could not take a chance with Lucy anymore and I had her put down. I cried for several days after but she was a danger to any female dog and she was an excape artist to boot. Keep that in mind with your other dogs. Because it is a stray Pitt, you don't know what kind of life it has led, and it is not that they are meaner than any other breed, it is that they are just "so capable" when it comes to dog fighting. Do not trust her with your other females, if you have any.

My guess is that somebody dumped her. If she had puppies that where young and still nursing, she would take you back to them. If she seems lost, she was probably left there by some A$$#@!E who made a few quick $$$ on her pups. When we were living in our old house, up in the hills, we had someone dump an EXTREAMLY sweet young spaniel female in the flood control area behind our house right after christmas; she was probably about 9mos old. She still had milk. She was very thin and so lost, she didnt know where she was. I took her all around on lead seeing if she would lead me to any pups, but she just seemed confused. We took her in, posted adds in the newspaper, around town but never found an owner. We found her a great home with a family who cherished her. A few years later somebody dumped a pit bull female and her four month old pups (3 of them) in the same spot. They would not come to me. I left food out for them, but they dissapeared. People are assholes.

Hi EM's,what you did alone should be comended. Most people would not even bother.I too have helped or thought i had helped a dog only to find out the Humane Society put the pup down as a result of a bad judgement call or so they said.I would concentrate on placing her because for all we know the pups could be sold or allready past away.If you try to go back to the place where found and turn her loose there is a good chance she will bolt and then you will feel worst.I do know that it is heartbreaking thinking of those pups but as i said we dont know enough to make that call.I appreciate people like yourself that give a dam. Confused or nervous? She may be nervous because she doesn't trust you to show you where her pups are. I would take her back and watch her from afar (as far as you can). I bet she just doesn't know whether to go to them and risk someone hurting her pups (in her mind/instinct) or just nervously pace around. Other things that could have happened: they could already be dead....or like someone else said - she could have been dumped. But if the pups are too young to sell and nursing, they probably would have all been dumped together - but then again scum that do that would probably want to make a buck off of her, too. My guess is she doesn't want anyone to know where they are. Wolves and other animals in the wild will actually INTENTIONALLY lead others astray to confuse them and keep them away from their pups. And until they are positive all threats are gone, they won't go back to them.

I think it is wonderful that you picked her up and care enough about her to take care of her or find her a great home - good for you. As for the pups, I'll bet she was dumped after she weaned her pups (they might have weaned her very early, even 3 weeks) - so there are no pups out there, especially if she acted "confused" when you brought her back to that spot - if she left her pups somewhere she would be very interested in going directly back to them. I think there are no pups to worry about. molly

Update is that we found out who dumped her, We found the owner, He finally fessed up after I layed it on thick !! And we have reunited her with 3 puppies, they are about 3.5 to 4 wks old, so I was off a bit which was good, But she still had some discharge which threw me off. Anyway the guy was ticketed x's 3 Abandonment, Neglect, and Abuse. We know there are 2 other pups that were taken away from her, But 1 was taken a week ago and shows no interest, So we let the owners have it back, and the other we have not been able to reach the people who have it yet. We'll just have to see how it all goes. Anyway thought I would let you know. He dumped her at the video store and he lives in a different town, explains her confusion. He did not want her anymore because she was making a mess of his shed, which is where he kept her and the pups. Nice Guy. blah wanna hurk now. Thanks for all the suggestions I was really torn last night and so confused as to what to do. I really appreciate all who responded. Thanks again.

So what will happen to this female dog now? Maybe you can post a picture and can find her a home from someone on the database. I love Bulldogs myself. It's such a shame the bull breeds get such finger pointing, when it is the owners who deserve it.

WOW, EchMeadows - GOOD FOR YOU. I hate to hear stories with owners like this - GRRRrrr!!!!!! You renew my faith that there are good decent samaritans out there!
