the secret of producing dogs that work...
an average female bred to a hard male, or a super female to an average male?
can an average female produce super? what about the opposite?
what about a hard pushy excellent male with a similar female counterpart?

Nikos, common thought is that the female imprints herself more on the litter than the male, by about 60:40. Can an average female produce "super"? That would depend on not only the female, but her ancestors.
The best with the best tends to produce the best, but any combination will produce some so-so puppies as well. If you get a superstar or two out of any litter then you have done as well as can be done.
Just my opinions,

i agree odds go up when best is bred with best...
problem is so many average females here in the u.s. (so i think)
i think people sometimes try to complement the dam with a sire that has what she is lacking and viceversa (prey female with civil male; soft bite female with crushing bite male...) to get the middle; i think this is not totally correct for breeding; working qualities are recessive for the most part, not single gene, but multifactorial, so it is sometimes hard to get the perfect blend. the extreme good qualities are seldom passed, or rarely passed i should say so repeated breedings are needed
i see so many "top working litters" posted with "super" studs, but the female doesn't have a correct anatomy for instance; pups turn out weak, lanky, unbalanced... still those pups are sold for a fortune

In the human world, more often than not, a "superstar" athlete or genius, comes from average stock. Generally, when two superstars "get together" (tennis players, olympic athletics, etc.) their progeny do not become superstars. There are exceptions, but few. Einsteins parents, Tiger Woods parents, etc., usually were "golden middle" (oh no, there is that phrase again:). I would like to see an article discussing only VA1 to VA1 or BSP top dogs to their counterparts, breedings and see if superstars were conceived. I know that the trainer/owner factor is in there also, but it would be interesting reading. Can't wait to see how Angelina Jolie's and Brad Pitt's child looks at 18 (not the adopted one)
