I have a female German Shepherd, that is ready to Whelp any day. My older female (age 8) is like her adopted mother and they are very close. My pregnant female has been showing MUCH more anxiety than usual , when my older female is out of her sight, so my question is this: Would it hurt to have my older female close to her during whelp, if it would ease her anxiety? I know my older female would never hurt momma or the pups, but may be concerned/worried if my momma dog whimpers during contractions ,but if seperated she too will be anxious. They do Love each other very much!

I had a similar situation with my sheltie this year she was a first time momma and my 4 year old German shepherd was there during the whelping process now these 2 are very close and the sheltie looks up too the god as a momma dog. I am thankful she was there cause she kept things calm and even helped with the general clean up that the sheltie wasn't sure how too do. It wasn't until 3 days later her mother instincts kicked in and she was a bit more stand offish too the gsd who was being a surrogate mom. But she continued to allow the gsd too come visit and help clean the babies. So the answer is its OK just be careful not too stress momma out. Which mine never did. Best of luck on your new kids!
