hey all,
i'm sorry i know this is probably common knowledge but, if you breed 2 black and tans,
and the sire's pedigree has blacks in it,
but the dams does not..
not that i am aware of( i can't find one)
but the dams sire has produced a black when bred to a black.
CONFUSED YET?LOL
is there a chance of producing a black pup if these 2 bl/tans bred
Yes it is possible. If there are bblack dogs in the sire's pedigree it is a chance that the sire carries the black recessive gene. As for the female you said that her sire has produced black puppies before which means he is a black carrier it is possible that he passed that black recessive gene to that female. So it is possible that both carry the black recessive gene. The only way of knowing is when they have a litter, even still though the may both carry the gene and a black dog not be produced this litter so it may take trial an error.
I have never had experience with any GSD puppies & colors, so I cant give you any info on that. I did find this website though I was looking at it myself, easy to understand. Hope this helps.

a black dog is only produced if both parents carry the black recessive, and give one black gene each, to the puppy. Or if both parents are black, all puppies will be black. One parent can be black - if the other parent does not carry black recessive, then no puppy in the litter will be black, but all will carry black recessive. If one black/tan parent has a black parent, then yes that dog carries black recessive. If any dog produces a black puppy, then you know he/she carries black recessive.

I hope this is a good example for you. My male(all black) came from Cliff vom Osterburgeck and he is all black, and my male's mother is Sandra vom Alschbachtal and is a dark sable. Her whole litter came out all black. She was bred to another sable before that and the pups were all black, but my male when bred with my female(black sable) only produced 4 all black and 6 sables. Don't know if that helped any or just got more confusing. I hope it helped some.
Kelly, that only got me more confused. But I've decided instead of trying to produce black pups, I'll find one to buy. Seems like there are way too many puppies already out there anyway.
I'm sorry. My female who is black sable was bred to Puck vom Grafental and she produced 1 all black male that we are keeping.

1. Fill large horse trough with water.
2. Add 6 bottles of Lady Clairol (Jet Black)
3. Throw a tennis ball into the trough.
Ouila!
;)
