The end of December, the BOD of the GSDCA voted (9 for, 8 against) to allow Andrew Hunte of the infamous Hunte Corporation, the largest wholesaler of pet shop puppies in the USA, in as a member of the national breed club. This was after objections from a good percentage of the membership. Details can be read at: http://www.thedogpress.com/default.asp

"In fact, AKC has welcomed the Hunte operation which is said to generate nearly a million registrations per year. Therefore it is apparently fine for a breed club to welcome him, too." That makes me sick, of course the AKC loves this guy, with them upping the puppy registration fees to $20, he generates $20million in revenue for them each year! I love the fact that he talked about how proud he was to have purchased an incenorator to discard his dead dogs instead of just throwing them in the ditch in the back!

On a related note, this is an article from the New York Times Sunday magazine about the trend of designer dogs. The primary source for this article is a puppy mill owner. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/04/magazine/04dogs.t.html?ex=157680000&en=8e6ce1dbb8bde76f&ei=5124&partner=permalink&exprod=permalink

I would like to hear from any of the board members and what they have to say about the gifts, that the article says they received. (I wonder if they really did.) The article also made an insinuation of how this man disposes of his animals, but it was very vague and actually was talking about a television report about another facility and owner entirely. The article gave no concrete substantial information that this man is doing anything wrong, other than breeding too many puppies, in their opinion. What is the limit for the rest of us, 5,4,3 litters, 2 litters, 1 litter or as the animal rights activists want, no litters. Next thing you know, if you have 3 or more breeding age females, whether you are breeding them or not, you will be under federal inspection, or did that already happen? Hmmmm.

This could be the nail in the coffin for the our beloved breed. Do you think the pet store will care if they sell to responsible owners? Are they going to breed responsibly? Does anyone understand why he would want to be a memeber, all he needs to BS the pet store buyer is AKC. So why GSDCA? We all understand why GSDCA allowed. I saw a report awhile back that they want to go into high end pets/stores. I do not care if they offer high end dogs, I know they are not staying in touch with the litters they sell to see if health problems. YUCK, THIS IS A MESS................

I just went to the Hunte website and Mr. Hunte is nothing like, what the original poster or article insinuated. Go to his website at http://www.thehuntecorporation.com/tour/ and see for yourself. In regards to what the writer of the original article tried to compare Mr. Hunte to low life scum of the earth, animal abusers, is waaayyyy off base. I'm sick of people on this site bad mouthing someone with out any friggin facts. Go to his website and see what he's doing, in effect, he is putting the mud pit puppy mills out of business. I'm not personally a fan of what he is doing, but damn he is doing it right. Read below an exerpt from his website: "Founded in 1991,The Hunte Corporation is the world's leading licensed distributor of pure-bred puppies to select pet stores. We take great pride in our “Puppy First” policy, and are totally committed to animal welfare. Our puppies are supplied by the best licensed professional breeders in the country. Each pup is double-examined by one of our full time vets, both incoming and prior to delivery. It’s also microchipped for lifetime identification and beautifully groomed. Last but not least, your Hunte puppy is transported in comfort, complete with vaccination record, health certificate and pedigree, to your local pet store. All these puppy-friendly benefits are important, but the most important one of all is tender loving care. That’s why our staff members strive to spend quality time with every animal daily. Puppies that receive loving human care are better socialized. No wonder Hunte puppies make such happy, healthy pets!" ""People say we have the world's greatest facilities, along with an incredible team of care personnel, groomers, veterinarians and drivers. But we're only as strong as our weakest link. That's why attention to detail is so important."" "Andrew Hunte"

How can people defend this man? Sure, the pups aren't in squalor in muddy pens, but show me where it says that the parents have hip/elbow xrays, that they are screened for other heriditary diseases, that the adults are given the excercise and attention they need daily (all I saw was that pups are given attention) and proof that the females are not bred on every heat cycle until they die! How is mass producing puppies of who knows how many different breeds better for any breed? Isn't that the point of breeding???

Yes, this does sound lke a really great way to sell purebred dogs to pet shops. Hunte talked his way into GSDCA by presenting the BOD with gifts bearing his corporate logo and then finished convincing them by describing in great detail his state-of-the-art crematorium that takes the place of the ditch he once used behind his corporate facility. Now dead dogs can be disposed of with a proper burial rather than shoveled into a large ditch and left to rot. His "operation" was featured on a TV expose. Another great thing about the Hunte Corp is that this organization represents about one million AKC registrations annually. So glad that his noble deeds are resulting in stopping the mud pit puppy mills whatever they are. Best to hope that he doesn't target GSD breeders next; he might want to won the franchise for breeding out dogs too. I can only assume this was meant in jest and you know that Hunte is not going to represent himself as anything other than responsible person on his own website.
