A little while go I posted about a puppy that was returned to me as the buyer was worried she may have dysplasia. When I got her back the first thing I did was take her to the vet but we had to deal with a few issues before investigating the possible hip problem any further. First she had had diarrhea for several days before she came, it was not very severe luckily, she kept eating and drinking and did not get dehydrated, but worrying. She also had a rash on her belly and sore patches at the corners of her eyes. Her new coat, just coming through, was rather opaque compared to the glossy one of her sister who I have had all the time. The vet said he thought her immune system seemed rather depressed. He did a range of blood tests and feces sample which showed the diarrhea to be caused by a protozoan and we treated this, the other problems resolved after a few days too, the blood tests were all normal, she is happy and playful.. However, today we were playing with the puppies and I noticed that she has a large lump or swelling on her back, just behind the shoulder blades starting above the spine and extending slightly to one side -incidentaly the same side she tends to limp on. It does not seem to be painful. I wondered if it was a reaction at the vaccination site, but it is nearly a month since she was vaccinated. The lump is about the size of an egg, maybe a bit flatter. I am not sure if it was there before or not, its not possible to see it without touching as its covered by fur. Well, I will be taking her to the vets next week but I just wondered if anyone has any ideas about this? Re the hips she does not have any pain extending the legs backwards and she can jump up on her hind legs and climb up steep slopes (I have not let her do this much, but just testing)....she is 3 months by the way.

Yes, it could be a vaccine reaction but it sounds like it may be abcessing. You will want to have it looked right away.

I had a friend who male pup kept getting these big lumps. Seems like they tried to get rid of them without much as but once the pup was a year or so old they went away. These lumps were bigger than a golf ball closer to hardball size. Wish I could remember more and if I see friend will ask...

It might be a sterile abcess at the site of an injection.

Thanks, the lumpi s quite soft does not seem to move and is not red or hot. I will anyway take her to the vet tomorrow. What is a sterile abcess?

by gsdlvr2 on 05 February 2007 - 02:02

if the lump is soft it's likely a contained infection, easy to treat.Still go to the vet and vet will give antibiotics probably . A sterile abcess is the same thing. A contained area of pus
