I would like some opinions on how people teach the out in protection work and also how do you deal with a trained dog that has a hard time outing.

I would ask if the dog outs on a toy? (ball, tug..)

should be taught before protection work is started:-)

Make it easy and start by playing two ball.

Show us what you are dealing with. That would be helpful. Many times with an older dog and a crappy out, the use of the pinch had become a stimulant, and they just kept stimulating the dog, making it harder for him to out. I think a lot of times the dog did not have a good understanding of the out before he moved on.

I agree with judron.

Outing during obedience and protection are totally different for strong dogs.  The obedience "out" does make it a little easier when teaching the out on a sleeve.  Real key is to identify the state of drive the dog is in when you are having problems outing during protection.  If in defense then the helper needs to help put the dog in prey, can be done with side to side movement of sleeve, then command out,  if needed, a pop on the prong.  With very high prey dogs choke might be needed, really depends on the dog and training foundation.

The dog must understand the response to the out command no matter what the "drive" It,s basic foundation work.

Sometimes dogs have problems with outs depending on the helper.

Outing a tug or ball has no correlation with outing the sleeve for certain strong dogs as the sleeve is the highest possible reward (it needs to be re-trained in protection regardless of how it was trained in OB). For  weaker dogs, it does not matter.
