As many of you know, my female GSD Ansgar vom Kalibeck detected my cancer, & has been my buddy throughout my long cancer journey. I had another surgery on Wednesday, & poor Ansgar was frantic by Thursday morning. I was home Wednesday evening but I was too out of it to interact with her too much, & yesterday I was SOOO sick...my daughter came over to check on me, & she's not a frequent visitor in my home, although we visit her frequently. Well, Ansgar decided this person should not simply barge into the house & into my bedroom, opened her crate & I got to see ---almost--- the long bite across my bedroom. Now my daughter has GSDs too, so she's not a nervous nelly, but she did sprint the last 10 feet to my bedside, with Ansgar looking pretty serious right behind her. I put my hand out & blocked Ansgar on the chest, & told her Ous! It's ok, baby...& she chilled instantly & went I to waggy, sniffy mode, & of course I was still kinda loopy, so I started giggling. My daughter was nonplussed, she just proceeded with her visit. After she left, I called to apologize & make sure nothing happened prior to the part I saw, but OMG!!! I've always considered Ansgar a sweet, smart fluff ball! Well she proved she can bring it on when she needs to! And turn it off when she's told to! We started Schutzhund training with her, but never really made past tracking & the flirt pole, & a little OB.... Who knew??? I guess the moral of the story is don't discount what your dogs are capable of! And I'm the queen of dog safety, (which is why she was in her crate) & it still almost happened to me! Just sayin'!

You know, I'd always though Star, my WGSL/ASL cross, would bomb out if she had to protect for real. Heck, I've trained her to be my hearing ear service dog...she'd BETTER not decide she wants to bite some random stranger!
We've started the protection phase of IP0 now that she's going to be doing her BH this spring, and I am seeing a side to her I had NO IDEA existed!
I think if someone came into my house unannounced in the middle of the night, they just might get a VERY nasty surprise!
I was watching Caesar 911 the other night, and a lady had a pitbull/lab mix that only became aggressive after she was hospitalized for a month. Cesar tested the dog out, and quickly realized the dog was PROTECTING her. Once she got the dog under control, and walking properly at heel, he realized she didn't need protecting any more, and the problem was solved!
So, wouldn't suprise me your illness has a lot to do with Ansgar's actions!

Thank you Pioneer Wife & Nans, she's always been a good girl, but I didn't know how good she could be!
Sunsilver, Ansgars inner mother has turned on since I've been sick. Every time I leave the house she's very upset, & has to give me the slow & careful once over when I get home. If Carl doesn't allow her to approach me, like he didn't after my surgery, she gets frantic, even howling in her dispair until she can come to me & check me out & get a little loving. I'm thinking she was very determined not to let anyone get near me until she had the chance to inspect me! And nobody informed my daughter to wait until Ansgar had her chance...my daughter has come over & just walked in before if she knows we've already crated the dogs in anticipation of her arrival. And Ansgar didn't care. But after Ansgar knew I was ill, knew something had been done to me....look out! My protective girl, God bless her, without her I wouldn't be here!

First of all...Jackie...I hope you're feeling better...Wish you all the best...
but...We NEVER know what our dogs will do until they're put in that position...So...You can't underestimate them...
Our German Shepherds are an amazing breed...They will protect their own..Their family is just that..."Their Family"...

Thank you, Qman! I won't take my girl for granted ever again, her dam had fire in her belly, & her sister does too, but I've never seen that side of Ansgar before! She's always been my huggy, kissy girl, in my lap every chance she gets. Surprise! My other 2 GSDs didn't budge, never even barked! Dang.....!
