Hi All -

My female is really sick and I will try to make this short while still giving necessary details. My 11.5 year old female showline threw up right after dinner on Monday evening last week. No big deal but uncommon. She began drinking excessive amounts of water, then Wednesday and Thursday nights she peed on the floor in the bedroom - NEVER has happened before. By the time I took her in Friday for suspected UTI, she has a history of these but Clavamox usually fixes it quickly, she had had multiple accidents in the house and could barely make it outside. Since we have used Clavamox several times recently we decided to put her on Baytril. She has never had Baytril before.

I gave her the dose Friday and by Saturday AM she could barely stand up on her own. She looked totally dazed and her head had a visible tilt to it and her balance is understandably off. She's falling and walking like she's drunk with exaggerated, staggering movements. Looked up Baytril side effects and it says some dogs have serious balance issues, drink excessively, may fall over. Rushed her back to the vet Saturday and he said he's never seen a dog have that sort of reaction before. She only had 1 dose of Baytril Friday so since everything else seemed to check out - no nystagmus, bloodwork from Nov OK, urine came back clear with no sugars - we decided to switch to Clavamox and hope that by Sunday the med would clear her system and she would get better.

Today, Sunday, she is worse. Same symptoms but falling over more. I made an appt to go back to do more testing tomorrow/Monday but am looking to see if any of you have had similar problems. This dog has not shown any of these symptoms before and it only appeared immediately following a dose of Baytril. Vet says she could have Old Dog Vestibular Disease, high blood pressure - indicating seizures, or some sort of brain tumor. Thoughts???

Desperately seeking answers and jingles/vibes/prayers.

That sounds just like what we went through with Jewel...

The Vesibular thing is SO hard to watch... she couldn't stand up, would wet herself, wouldn't eat her normal food (had to be coaxed with chicken and rice or scrambled eggs), was so dizzy and confused, her eyes would dart back and forth..... but it DID get better within a couple weeks. Thoughts and prayers are with you.... hoping for a quick recovery!

That happened to my girl Mira, I called the vet thinking she was having a stroke, but all the symptoms were like what your girl is having, they told me it was Vestibular Disease.

I gave her something for feeling seasick, and then just waited it out, cause it will only last about three days and then gradually your dog will return to normal.

This happened to Mira last spring, she turned twelve in December and is doing great running around and barking, I don't think she can hear anymore though, but that doesn't bother her a bit.

Her head was tilted to the side for about one week after the episode, now she is fine.
