Hello,
Can someone please tell me what is the best way to treat 'GIARDIA' in puppies?
The vets are charging rediculous prices here in California these days...It's cheaper to go to the EMERGENCY clinic at the local hospital.
Thanks,
John

I use SafeGuard (Fenbendazole)... I get the Safeguard at Tractor Supply Company.
Do a search on this forum and there are several people that have used it with great results.

SafeGuard for 6 days straight. Up to 10 days if it's a real bad case. Revivalanimal.com

I am also thinking coccidia is more probable (exposure to giardia is not probable in young pups nursing) but fenbendazole at the dosage (based on weight) needed for puppies in the form of Safeguard (10% liquid) works for me on giardia and I generally use it for worms (5-6 days running) in puppies as it gets everything with 5-6 doses. Fenbendazole is safe so for puppies I just give it and go for everything with one treatment for 5-6 days consecutively. Fenbendazole is suppressive but not curative for coccidiosis. Link below to an online source for giardia and coccidiosis treatments ..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metronidazole I get it from my vet for cheap but you might be able t order it online. works on all sorts of yuckie bugs.
I recently got a does because of the same bug in my own dog. Giardia is often spread by birds.

I would guess that Cocci is what your pups have...ALBON is what you need
You can order it from Revival animal.com or ask your vet to order it in the large bottle in suspension like banana syrup...I order the large bottle and keep it in fridge for yearsl. It is also wonderful for a pregnant bitch who gets diahreah as you cannot use drugs on a bitch who is PG...
Also be sure to treat the bitch of these pups also..Panacur is called Fenbendazole. and can be used with other wormers etc and is safe.. I buy it at the feed store and it is called Safeguard Goat wormer about 19.00 for a bottle it is the right % and you use aprox 2 ml per pup...5 ml for a 17 lb pup etc...I used it last week on my 11 y r old cocker spaniel who has been traveling all over Texas with us and developed bad diahreah which could be whipworms from deer, birds, squirrels etc in out back yards where we were or guiardia.... 7 day treatment once a day and then give a probiotic to the adults.
Pups should be on puppy food and just make sure they are eating and drinking . Worming should be done when the diahrea ceases. Albon is my preventative maintenance with every puppy ever born as they get Cocci from licking each other in anal area and eating poop of their littermates etc...If you ask your vet nicely and just tell him or her, you have a litter and want to safeguard it from the freaky cocci bug, they will order it for you...IT is about 69.00 for a bottle ...
I have no clue how guiardia would be on a pup unless they are on ground in muddy conditions or outside 23/7
Panacur will not hurt if you follow with albon or vice versa...very safe drugs...Methodiazole is more dangerous and is safe but has to be used in tiny amounts on pups...Flagyl is the call name for Methodiazole... I carry Flagyl in my vehicle at all times all year long..You never know when a dog eats something or gets diahrea and it can sluff your dogs intestine immediately if you do not use Flagyl to stop the infection and get out the infection and stop the diahrea...It is safer than Imodium or drugs over the counter that have aspirin and or aspirin derivative in them...I do use ImmodiumAD in Liquid form for children if I do not have flagyl or get in a bind...Stopping diahrea is a must immediately...

Giardia absolutely can be contracted by puppies that are kept inside in clean areas. I was shocked to learn over the winter my litter had giardia. They were inside in the house the entire time. Dam was never symptomatic. Litter became very ill with watery diarrhea at 5-6 weeks. I also thought coccidiosis, treated with albon, no improvement. Had lab test stool, sure enough, it was giardia.. Treated with panacur and metronidazole. No more problems. Good luck!

Coccidia is becoming very resistant to Albon, you're much better off using toltrazuril, plus it's only a 1-3 day treatment and actually kills the coccidia.
