Is this on your GSD or a hound?
I clean my dogs ears (GSD) about once a month with cotton pads and ear cleaning solution. After the outer ear is clean, I squirt a specially formulated (keeps the Ph balance accurate) solution into the ears one at a time...massage for a few seconds, then let the dog shake it's head.
You can tell if a dog is getting a yeasty ear by the smell.....Its' very strong....A healthy ear does not stink.

good question Clc ,,a hound I imagine would be more prone to yeast issues due to those cute "floppy"'ears!
As Jenni asked about the diet, I recall reading that allergies are a main culprit for yeast infections in the ears.
An inexpensive solution for cleaning ears is witch hazel. Also, a couple of table spoons of raw apple cider vinagar added to the food,,I can't remember why it escapes me at the moment lol, Maybe someone else knows the logic behind it,,,
