sorry four (4)
Lev: 20- 23
20 All flying insects that walk on all fours are to be detestable to you.
21 There are, however, some winged creatures that walk on all fours that you may eat: those that have jointed legs for hopping on the ground.
22 Of these you may eat any kind of locust, katydid, cricket or grasshopper.
23 But all other winged creatures that have four legs you are to detest.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the what constitutes an insect leg in olden days through translation. It really is a guide in what is safe to eat at the time. Particularly in the raw form.
For instance, grasshoppers or locusts eaten raw are full of protein. Eating a bumblebee raw is not advisable, at all.

For once, I agree with Beetree. My Bible doesn't even say insects.

I thought the Bible was inerrant, in all ways!? So, you're admitting that there are errors, due to translation and copy? Is that what you're saying? So, little mistakes are okay? What about the big ones?

What about eating centipedes ?
by beetree on 20 March 2014 - 22:03
They are poisonous, even if they won't kill you if you do eat one. Plus, they don't have wings so they are not really in the same bug class.
Millipedes, too. Major yuck!

Travels,
There is no error. That is your take on it. You want one definition to be static, and to understand the Bible, it is anything but that, IMHO. Context is a wonderful thing. Now the fundamentalist, literalists who also call themselves Christians, will have a cow with this, I know, but they don't bother me at all for some reason. I just let them go on with their self-limiting ways and worry about myself. That is usually a big enough job!
I actually base this idea of "what to eat lessons from the Bible" on James Michener's, "The Source," which is something I read eons ago. I have actually never read the Bible and probably never will. I have of course read parts of it, or had other parts read to me. If one has a certain flexibility of mind, then one can realize there are layers of understanding in the words and/or translations of the Bible. It makes it that much more complete for everyone.
That is what is remarkable. I like this illustration. Think of how Bugs Bunny cartoons were funny when you were five years old. And then maybe you watched them all again sitting in the dorm as an adult, at college. All the adult jokes just made it better! And how it increases the audience, and it was something totally lost on you, as your five year old self.
