My almost 9 month old male GSD pup likes to jump almost vertical up to lick my face. I know it is not a good thing to do as it may hurt both.

But is the tendency to jump rather high vertically a good sign in terms of hip health? This is my first GSD that really likes to leap vertically.

at that age dogs have more exuberence than coordination - the jumping is fine but there is a lot of potential for permanent injury should they come down at a bad angle/twist etc. you prolly should not encourage it for long term health. however if there is a bit of forward motion the risk of injury is less.

i know it looks cool and tempting to promote but why put your dog at risk. smaller breeds are less at risk imo.

My girl likes to do that too, but I try to do everything possible to prevent it. I've been told by the vet not to allow it. She is good with me, but she sees my husband as free game. Now I have to work on training my husband to do his part :(  My feeling is it isn't worth the risk.

No.

My dog does not have a hip she is post (FHO) and she jumps vertically w/o issue. She also jumped vertically before surgery with a really bad hip. The only time we knew something was wrong was after many hrs of hiking/running she would slightly lift back leg to rest.
