I have a 2 year old male. He has his BH and I plan to put more training on him but I don't want to breed him. He's becoming obnoxious with the girls. I would like to get him snipped but I don't want him to become a "couch potato" will neutering cause this to happen? I appreciate your input. Thanks, Gracie

No, neutering will not cause him to become a couch potato. What allows a dog to be a couch potato is an owner who is a couch potato and does nothing with the dog. Make sure you keep him lean and give him the exercise and quality food he needs and get him cut. He may still give the girls a hard time, but at least you will know he can not impregnate one. Good luck.

Not necessarily. It's hard to tell. I have a GSD who's not neutered and he's not an obnoxious horn ball, but I also have a Lab that we just recently neutered because he was just a real pain in the ass. lol We thought and hoped the little snippin of his manhood would calm him down but no such luck and he's 3 yrs old now. It has however helped in his desire to try to escape the yard when he smells a bitch in heat and he tends to not lift his leg as much. If you don't plan on breeding him then at best if it doesn't take care of his overactive libido lol it's better for him health wise.

Gracie, at two he is what he is and may not calm down, but the risk of rescue puppies is eliminated.

Hodie, Gracie is my friend and I seriously doubt that she'd ever become a couch potato herself. That woman exists on 4 or 5 hrs of sleep a night. Busy, busy, busy person. I'll print out everyone's responses here to give to her as she doesn't have power back yet. We had a horrible ice storm in our area. Some people are still without power but most, including myself went a minimum of 9 days without power. Bad situation we are trying to climb out of and hodie, when you said a few days ago you have 3 feet of ice in your dog runs I didn't doubt you one moment as it's been a bad situation all over the country. While he is watching TV, best to substitue potato chips and pastries with German celery. This will prevent the lard-assness from occuring.

Ive said it before, all neutering will do is insure that your dog will not breed. It did absolutely NOTHING to "calm" down my 4 year old male

by gottagsd on 31 January 2007 - 21:01

Glad this came up because I am going to neuter my 2 year old in March and was "on the fence" No plan on breeding. He is active but not over the edge. he gets plenty of exercise and sleeps well at night. I have had him attempt to mark is territory 3 times in the house and I addressed it and it has not become a problem. The question is do you think it "helps" after they are neutered?

by hodie on 31 January 2007 - 22:01

Hi Birdy, I do not know where you live, but here it is terribly cold and we are about to get temperatures late this week in double digit negatives....record lows potentially and likely as low as have been seen in ten years. I have 4 feet plus of snow still in areas where it drifted and I could not shovel it all. So it will just have to wait until Spring. In any case, my experience is that if a dog is not neutered early, then neutering late will prevent unwanted pregnancies, but not necessarily put the male on better behavior LOL. But if your friend is not a couch potato and the dog is fed and exercised appropriately, he should do fine otherwise. Good luck with the weather because I have a hunch that what is coming our way is coming your way!

Hodie, You are West of me. I live in the SW corner of Missouri. A couple weeks ago Oklahoma had an ice storm go through and it kept heading East and landed here in Springfield, MO and surrounding areas of the county. Other counties got hit really hard too. This was known as a tree town but most every tree here was damaged in some way. Scary to hear the cracking then falling on houses, cars etc. Old timers say they don't ever recall and ice storm hitting this area so hard. All the trees down it looks like a war zone. Really sad. If we are in the middle of global warming, someone needs to inform mother nature of that as we are freezing here and no end cold here either. Stay warm, Birdy...
