At what age can you start using a prong collar on a puppy? At what age can you start correcting a puppy with a prong? I realize every puppy is different and some are pleasers whereas other are not, some pups are harder than others, but I would appreciate basic guidelines. 20 plus years ago when I trained with a Schutzhund club some people started using them as early as 5 or 6 months. Any information would be helpful.

If I may jump to conclusions and guess why you're asking this, I'd say if she were mine...I would.

When i did use prongs, i started them after the puppy knew the basic commands, after teething at around 6 months.
I have been using the E collar with much better results, better timing and less visual involvement of me during corrections so that our relationship remains strong.

Isn't she pushing a year old, Char? Maybe 10mos.?

I'm sending you a PM Starrchar. I have used prongs on puppies starting at about six months old, but I try and make my focus and obedience foundation as solid as I can before I use corrections.

Lol, Jenni! Thank you :)
Hired Dog, Thank you for your suggestions.

Jenni, Yes, she just turned 10 months.
EduCanine, I agree, I would not correct until I am 100% certain that she knows what I want. She does great with her focus and obedience with low or even medium level distractions, but if a dog enters the picture, all bets are off.

I think the answer is better explained by: At what age does a handler/trainer reach maturity and can train a dog without "cranking" on it...Then that is the age you should begin using a prong collar on your dog...

why not just learn how to train the dog properly instead of using these tools of force.

Tool of force? How so ?
Could be a tool of persuasion when used properly. A leash can be a "tool of force". Starchar is more likely to get her demands met with less conflict, using a prong rather than nagging her dog to distraction using a "tool" to which her dog has become desensitized.
