Something has been bothering me for a very long time...I've talked to a number of people who are wanting to become a Breeder...My first question is "What Is YOUR Goal"...What are you breeding for when you breed? And their answer is: Everything...I want to breed for Police Dogs...and Sport Dogs...Family Dogs and Personal Protection Dogs...My question is then...Soooo you're not really sure what you want and you don't have a particular goal in mind when you choose breeding partners...
Then I go farther and ask what characteristics does your Breeding Female possess and what characteristics are you looking for in choosing a breeder partner?
I feel too many people choose a breeding pair looking at selling the puppies and not in producing good representatives of the German Shepherd breed...Too many are looking for Watered-Down dogs that are more Lab Like then Working Dog Like...
What experience do you have with Perspective Breeders...What do they say is their goal...What do you say to these people when they don't have a GOAL in mind in becoming a Breeder...?

OOOoooh, Bob - I've found over the years that people can get
awfully touchy about being asked those questions ! Thank f**k
I don't regularly have to sell puppies ...
I reckon we would all like to think that anyone & everyone who
has an ambition to breed GSDs has a good grounding in the
breed, is knowledgeable with the sort of experience that comes
from time spent with the breed, has tried their hand - or even been
successful in - at least one of the activities connected with breed-
worth in GSDs, so knows what they are talking about. And
preferably has some type of experience in mating / pregnancy /
whelping dogs, whether in their family, in employment, or in another
breed.
I can dream, can't I ???

Bob,
Do you realize what the ramifications of telling someone in USA that they cant do something?
just sayin.............
To answer your question..........nod your head , smile, and move on. Nothin you say or do will convince them otherwise.

I am NOT a breeder, never have been, never will be, however, were I to start a breeding program, Malinois would be the breed I would focus on producing since it has been my favorite breed for 35 years.
What I would want to produce, to see out of my lines, would be very serious dogs for very serious police and military applications. There would be NO pets, no social sport dogs that everyone can handle.
I know where to get the breeding stock I would need, out of NVBK lines, and since I know what these lines would produce, there would, of course, be no registration papers nor the many alphabet soup acronyms that are killing the GSD today and make it more complicated.
My breeding program would last exactly 2.7 years since the vast majority of todays breeders breed to cater to the pet and sport market.

I love the German Shepherd Dog and think they ought to be smart enough to be a companion and be a police/protection dog,
after all, if that is not possible, than it is no longer a "German Shepherd Dog" now is it....

I think if a person wants to invest the time and money into training and socializing a working dog than that shows certain respect for
the breed itself, sounds like you would make an awesome MAL breeder!!!

I understand what you mean about>" the many alphabet soup acronyms that are killing the GSD today and make it more complicated."
I have met some GSD's that have a similar temperament as say a Labrador Retriever, that makes me want
to barf

Granted with that being said, sometimes in certain pairings/mating of any breed, there could be a dud, but that shouldn't be the norm.

Glad to hear that there's some people out there that feel the same way I do...I don't really call myself a breeder although I do breed ever so often...Maybe like 1 or 2 litters a year...And when I breed I'm bascially doing it for one reason and that is to produce a TOP WORKING DOG...However anyone that's done any breeding before and has a similar goal knows that an entire litter produces different levels of puppies/dogs...Some might be very high drive but you seem to always get some lower level drive's too...Or what I'd call puppies for Pet Homes...I guess I have a different thought about what a Pet Home ought to have too...
Most Pet Homes that I know want a German Shepherd to play with their kids and to guard them and their family...To me this isn't really the laid back...do nothing type dog...I think the best thing for our Working Dogs is to give them a job to do and they'll be happy...
When someone comes over to look at owning a German Shepherd I find myself not only trying to find out what exactly they want and need in a dog...but I find myself teaching...trying to inform people what the German Shepherd is all about and what the differences are...I'm not one that's against a Show Line German Shepherd...I just think of them as a different breed such as my wife's Yorkshire Terriers...It's her breed...NOT mine...

At this time of humble knowledge I had, as a buyer I would concentrate on the quality of the pups, their parents, siblings etc. Not pedigrees, not bloodlines, not what breeder claims and says. I will pay for the quality of the pup not the "quality" of the breeder. Many small breeders produce better quality dogs than big name breeders.
