Not sure how good or bad it is for dogs, lots of food manufacturer's use it in the dog foods but a while back 2 of my 4 dogs itched like crazy within hours after giving them something with any type flax, seeds or oil. Soooooooo, currently I try to avoid it but not always possible. Different for humans. That's about all I know about it. Good fiber in seeds...Good luck Nan

It is a plant source of 18- carbon Omega 3 fatty acid.
For animals, it has to be elongated to 20 and 22 carbon Omega 3. There is a question to the effectiveness of dogs to elongate the carbon chain. Younger dogs tend to be better at this.
For old dogs, I prefer fish oil, which is already the elongated form.

I feed grain free but I do put flaxseed in satin balls I feed because I do think it is beneficial.

sometimes the more we read, the more we bounce around from one brand of dog food to another. There are a lot of articles written about its effect on canine fertility, and skin allergies.
