So what do you guys think of this ingredient added in our dogs kibble foods?? And listed under organic kibble...

If you can't prenounce it, should you eat it?

as long as they come from natural organic sources, it's probably fine. They are a naturally occuring carbohydrate with some potential health benefits. But I guess I'd like to know how much they're putting in and where it's coming from.

Its just a fancy name for a type of sugar.

It's fake sugar like saccrin (SP).

They can synthesize it, but it can also occur naturally. I don't know that i've read anything ever that shows it works like Saccharin, aspertame or sucralose. I would avoid those 3 like the mother freaking plague in any food, human or dog. But Fructooligosaccharide? I guess I'd have to see more. I'm going back a long ways, but I don't remember anything particularly scary about it.

I believe it is a prebiotic (supports the growth of probiotics). From a nutrition article: Prebiotics are soluble, fermentable fiber, a type of nondigestible carbohydrate, also called resistant starch. Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are the most common, but other oligosaccharides, arabinogalactans, and lactulose are also considered prebiotics. Sources include inulin (a form of FOS extracted from chicory), larch (a source of arabinogalactins), pectins, beet pulp, gums (e.g., guar gum), and wheat dextrin (Benefiber).

I don't believe it's "prebiotic" any more than any other sugar is either. I don't buy that it's a "health" food any more than I am convinced it's like aspertame. It just is what it is. if it's in food, i'm not concerned. If they're adding it I'd be concerned where it's coming from and how much.
