I was bored & started browsing the internet GSD sale ads. Holy carp people want a lot for their dogs, but don't give you a lot of dog for the price!
Just a sample of what I found(in the States) & none of these are from the same sellers!!
5 yr old female, been bred a few times, has SG but no formal titles, does have HD/ED/DM cleared, from titled WL pedigree $7,500
2yr old male, known WL pedigree, no titles & doesn't say what training's been done, HD/ED clear, $7000
1 yr old female, basic OB training, but can come with additional training(huh?) WL type, $4,500
6 month old male, WL,  "puppy" training $3500

There's a ton more out there just like those. Now maybe I'm a bit crazy, but I couldn't see paying those amounts for what is being sold. Maybe I'm just expecting to much?

Everything costs more these days, why not dogs? If they can get those prices, good for them.

Think about it...
1500 (average) for a puppy has been a static for SEVERAL years, but the costs to break even on a litter has doubled in the recent years.

Guess I've been out of touch with costs of dogs(not counting pups).
In the same searching I found well bred, titled/proven dogs for about the same prices as those I listed above. Most of the titled dogs also came from known breeders, unlike those listed above that came from people/kennels I've never heard of.
I agree that if they are able to get those prices for their unproven dogs, more power to them. I just think it's a bit over the top... IMO

I paid $1500 for a puppy TEN years ago.

I have been offered $6k for a 1yr old dog with super pedigree and temperament. Total package dogs are always going to cost more than mediocre ones. I still didn't sell the dog! ;-)

You think that's bad, check out some showlines.

I know of one kennel that sells their SL puppies for $10,000 for their "show/breeding quality" 8 wk olds.

Sweet. By my calculations then, $5,000 would be the appropriate price for 1/2 showline puppies. Tongue Smile

Doesn't it go up a grand or so for every month longer that you have them? By that logic you'll be rolling in dough here soon, LOL

Yeah, especially when they're housebroken. Wink Smile

You'll never have to work again at that rate, LOL

Well, you can ask for a price, but that doesn't guarantee that it will be met.  And granted, there are a lot of people with more money than sense,  but if you know what you are looking for, you may be able to find it for a reasonable price.  Mind you, you won't get a VA quality litter at $500.00 per pup, but as I said, you should be able to find a reasonably priced dog within your desired parameters.  You have to do your homework, have a reputation for being good to your dogs (beleive it or not, many of the better breeders do care where their pups go to) and invest time and effort in the search & negotiation.  I've been offered really nice pups because I treat and feed my two dogs as well as I can.  You should be able to find a competitive dog at a good price.  After all, we're not out of the economic mess yet.
