1. Does the mother dog pass antibodies to kids only in first 3 days via colostrum or does she pass those antibodies to them till 2 months age via milk?
2. Is the theory of increasing protection to kids by giving 5 in 1 injection to mother 2 weeks prior to her giving birth has value?
Thanks, Ibrahim

The answer to your first question is that as long as the mother is nursing, antibodies are passed in the milk. As for your second question, I know that with humans, receiving the flu vaccine during pregnancy is associated with a stronger immunity to flu in the first six months for the child after birth. But, I don't know if that holds true for dogs or for the specific vaccines given to dogs.

Hello Ibrahim, I hope all is well
Giving an expectant bitch a booster while the pups are in utero does not seem to be a good practice. I am not a veterinarian but I have been told by a repro vet that you do not give a bitch a booster any later than one month before her heat cycle. Is there a greater risk in the environment that would require to this layman such a drastic measure? What are the risks for the timing of a booster in this manner? If you were able to increase the antibodies in the mothers milk would this only delay the point at which the mother's antibodies wore off and the final shot was able to take effect? By giving such a late term booster are you only creating a problem?

NO do not give a pregnant mama dog anything.... As far as antibodies mama dog produces them thru her milk the whole time puppies are nursing as long as she is protected. If we are talking say a rescue situation where you are not sure if mama dog is protected my suggestion is that you want and see. If puppies have been exposed to something horrible, wait and see. If you KNOW mama dog is NOT protected personally I would wait and see as it is possible for puppies to have natural immunityies to all kinds of environmental issues. Vaccinating the unknown would not be my first choice... Good luck Nan

Hi, Mamma is a astray dog which is pregnant, she looks like in 2-3 weeks will give birth, it is sure that she had no shots in her life, I called a breeder friend and she advised me to give her vaccination if I can catch her and take her to a vet, I called a vet, he said he has to see the bitch then he will decide !!

Hi Ibrahim, That pregnant mamma cannot have her puppies in the street, you should spay her before that, or rescue her until her children's birth, later spay her and find her puppies a home and finally let her where you found her, or find a new home for her. Good luck!
