Gigante

by Gigante on 27 January 2014 - 17:01

My problem is with the direction of the whole breed. Extreme prey drive. Very little to no suspicion bred just for sport ect ect. These are not protection dogs, but damn they do a routine and are easy to handle. I require a Sch. (protection dog) not a toy. Most are toys. Even in LE  the first question asked. Is he social? What is this overwhelming desire for people to have others love on and hug their dog? I do not require a social dog I need a dog trained well enough not to bite for no reason.

The breed as a whole is weak and in real life useless.

Wilted Rose

Like you said you produce strong civil pups and hard to place a litter. They can still be found.

Majority never equals whole. Shades Smile

" What is this overwhelming desire for people to have others love on and hug their dog?"LOL.

Gigante I hear you on that one. My thoughts are if they want to pet and love on a dog they should get their own.

" von der Maineiche"

Paul Garrison; In my experience with the breed, you can buy just about anything you want except for the dog with the superman BIG S on its chest. It might cost you some money, but what you claim to want to do, get an extreme female for breeding, can be done. Maybe someone will want to back you with funds. maybe you will find several females and that special male to breed them to. And then another top male for the next generation of this breed direction. It sounds all so simple. Money is your only Hurddle  No wait, you did say who will buy them from you. The cops are beginners and want the lesser specimens. the sport people want drive and no balls, But if you build it, they will come! go get started on your quest. It has to be more rewarding to save this breed then to take a bad ass mali out of a cop car and do obedience. That must be boring for you. This great breed program can not wait to start.

There is a serious shortage of qualified homes for dogs like Paul envisions and wants. Heck, I've had problems with some of mine when it comes to finding homes with common sense that actually want a dog to bite somebody, and my dogs, with the exception of one or two over the years, are not nearly as nasty as Paul wants. It really IS hard. People are wimps. They want society to look out for them and they want to feel safe buy suing everyone. No one wants to take personal responsibility for anything, and it affects the dogs, too. Cops (with a few exceptions)- same thing- they want "super social." Sorry, Officer...I breed German Shepherds, not Golden Retrievers. There is a serious misconception about what is proper temperament...jmo of course.

Yeah, it appears there is a serious misconception about proper temperament. If all I could find were dogs that wanted to eat everyone, I'd try and breed a better dog too.

I have word for dogs that see threat when there is none.

This is the part that seems to be missing in favor of "super social":

Copied from GSDCA website temperament section:

Temperament

The breed has a distinct personality marked by direct and fearless, but not hostile, expression, self-confidence and a certain aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. The dog must be approachable, quietly standing its ground and showing confidence and willingness to meet overtures without itself making them.

by zdog on 28 January 2014 - 16:01

And why would a dog with those characteristics be hard to place? Describes pretty much every dog I've ever had. Confident stable dogs are a breeze to live with.

Huh???  Who said they would be? That's not what Paul wants. Paul wants nasty and anti-social. That's what we're talking about. Then, the "super social" phrase came up as conversation wandered.

by zdog on 28 January 2014 - 17:01

Well anti social and nasty aren't in that breed description either. May I suggest a caucasion mountain shepherd?

Anyway I thought you were implying that today's gsds suck because people are pussies and can't handle those nasty dogs so everyone is breeding Golden's instead.
