I would never even attempt anything like that! There's NO way the breeder/owner can tell if each dog is getting his fair share of food. To me thats almost barbaric?? I feel sorry for the younger, smaller dogs!

you can not tell by their condition, you ever kept and worked and maintained 40 practical working dogs at a time (not breeders, workers) - you a city slicker i bet. i think yr dogs locked in crates most of their life to be let out to do sport training is barbaric, i doubt those dogs would trade their lives for what you would give them and i do not even have a clue who you are or what you do with yr dogs.
these are practical working animals like the GSD was....once upon a time.

Uhh, well, NO I'm not a "city slicker" but live in the country on a farm. I don't keep my dogs in crates AT ALL, if you look at the 2 in my avatar they are not crated, but spoiled house dogs. All my dogs have a 2 acre fenced yard to run and play in, I have 5 full time housedogs, and they each get fed all they want, everyday. All are titled conformation champions. And no way would I ever want to TRY to care for 40 dogs at one time, how can they possibly each get the individual attention each needs/requires?.

I'd hardly call it barbaric,
I also wouldn't feed that way.
And I don't agree with once upon a time VK4.

@vk4- well no I'd consider at least a couple of them underweight. but of course thats MY opinion only.
@Moons- and I said I'd call that "ALMOST" barbaric, not it actually IS>

IMO far from barbaric, as he had very good control of the dogs. Clearly they are trained and he values and spends time with his dogs.
I lived with my grandmother who had a VERY large scale breeding kennel....puppy mill at points, really....feeding multiple dogs like this was commonplace. Once a routine was established it was easy.

Visit a kennel where they raise "curs" used for fox hunting. Dogs like these are considered livestock and treated as such. Ever see a cow with it's own food trough?
