There was a recent thread on this and the short answer is no not really. You can confirm the dog has papers but what is on them can be debated on several levels.

Thanks for the response. How does one go about just confirming that a dog has her pink papers and not necessarily what's on them? I've got a picture of the papers but don't know if they're legit and just want to confirm it.

Pink papers don't mean much .. look for desirable bloodlines and breeders who turn out dogs that you like. Buying a dog overseas or buying an import can be good or more often as not bad if you don't know what you are doing .. pretty much no one knows what they are doing. I would prefer to buy from a breeder close enough to drive to and pick up my dog or puppy in person. Then if things go terribly wrong you can take the dog or puppy back. Shipping dogs is an exercise in frustration and it can be dangerous for your dog as well as expensive for you. Canada is also a source for some dogs that I like and the distances depend on your location.

to verify the validity of the registration papers, you can contact the SV; sabine leib, akc@schaeferhunde.de, is your best bet. that'll tell you whether the papers were in fact issued by the SV and the health and trial notations were indeed submitted to and accepted by the SV. on a more informal lelvel, that often works quite well, try and contact the german kennel that bred the dog in question. to verify whether a dog matches the papers, you can check, in escalating order, the color and markings and/or tattoo/microchip against the papers or collect a dna sample. for the latter, contact the SV at dna@schaeferhunde.de for the kit info.

Thank you both for your help. As y'all may have realized, I'm not well versed in the area of finding a GSD (or any dog for that matter), and am wanting to ensure that I know how to verify things that someone tells me regarding a specific dog.
