Well, at least that's what my bf calls my large, new kitchen accessory. He says "the puppies are spotless; it's my food I'm worried about."
This is what -45F wind chills will bless you with. Our weather (Chicago) has been so nutso this whole winter, these pups have never been able to be transitioned to full time outdoor living, like I usually like to do around 4-5 weeks. I have a great 20' puppy pen that I've gotten almost no use out of w/these pups. Between nearly a foot of snow on the ground, rendering the kennel door about useless and the record-setting low temps, it's just not safe for them to be outside 24/7. They play outside for several hours every day, around 4-5 times per day, but these guys have way outgrown the whelping box and their climbing skills are too good for an x-pen, so this is what I now have right smack in the middle of my kitchen. It's a bit interesting to work around, and OMG, you should hear the noise when I'm making human dinner, LOL!

Keith, I don't. Floors are f'd.
We did them ourselves, though, so not a huge investment. No point in redoing them until my son isn't such a destructive little monster, though. I do try to keep the towels/blankets/puppy pads under the corners, not just to protect the floors, but also to keep the blankets taut and make clean-up easier. Honestly, we had a pipe burst that did some damage to the floor at the seams, especially, and so it's not such a big deal now. They're inevitably going to be replaced. If you clean up wetness as soon as you notice it, the floors fare pretty well. The scratches aren't as bad as you'd think. Certainly no worse than full-grown GSDs flying around causes.
LF, they're pretty clean. I cannot take all the credit. They start screaming, and if they've been fed recently, I know it means they have to poop, so out they go. They don't like to poop in the kennel, and haven't since the day they turned 6 weeks. If I'm too late, I grab it the second I see it, before they can roll around in it and make the kitchen stink. The only big mess I have is first thing in the morning, and when I have every inch covered it's really easy to just pick up all the linens and wash them while they're outside. I have 2 sets. The most work is actually rounding them all up and getting 8 of them all traveling the same direction. Inevitably, I get 5 outside and the other 3 run toward the living room, then vice versa once I get those 3 out. Lately, I've been teasing them w/food. I take a handful of Orijen and toss it into the yard and they go nuts trying to find it.
Yeah, he's looking straight at me, where the others are staring at the cat. The big line down the middle of his head also helps identify him.

LF,
Right because when quotation marks are used at the beginning of a topic it makes it so the topic has to be put in by every member who responds to the thread. Watch I will fix it. Not sure about the edit. Edited to add: the edit function works for me.

So how is it that they won't all go outside in an orderly line, when
most of them are forming a parade platoon inside the kennel, [to
watch whether you have any thing for them to eat ?]
Left, right ... left, right, left ...
They all look beautifully alert.

I wish that was in our kitchen! LOL!
Cutest line-up ever!
I can relate to the nasty weather. The other night we had -50 degree wind chills, and while we only had a couple of inches of snow, poor Qira had a hell of a time trying to do her business. After we get home from work I always tell her “go potty” while I’m unlocking the door and such… then stand on the porch and remind her “go poop too”. The poor dog ‘assumed the position’, then all of the sudden one paw comes up… then another, causing her to fall backwards on her butt, then a back leg comes up and she fell over. I busted out laughing, and she looked up from lying in the snow and let out this big whine. Poor dogs! We had not even been outdoors for 5 mins, I couldn’t imagine leaving a dog out in that kind of cold for any longer than that.

Yeah, I don't coddle dogs TOO much, but this cold isn't uncomfortable, it's dangerous. I've been worried about my horses all week.

My pups usually love the snow & cold, but theyre all a bunch of wussies this winter. No one wants to stay out longer than essential business takes. Lil'Bit was running around holding each foot up in turn to keep them warm, then tried to pee holding up one back leg, then tried to lift to other back leg up...just hysterical! Especially considering shes a she! The other 2 aren't so comical, they just hurry up!
Your kitchen 'crate' looks awesome, & the pups inside do too!
