At first glance of the title, I can't believe I'm going to take the time to read it :). My dogs have stopped to piss in about every orientation possible, if they even take the time to stop :). I think the only thing that dictate when or where the take a pee or dump is if they have to go or not and what direction they are facing when they feel like going

it smells n which other dog has been there most recently,

The fact that my dog has her nose to the ground we while she's looking for a spot tells me it's more based on the smell. So I agree with Hundmutter.
