Just wondering who tests their dogs for the long coat gene?
Mainly interested in stud dogs.
Thanks.

Thank you, anyone else test?

I've tested all mine through Animal Genetics.com, it's $40, and I usually combine it with their DM test, which is $45. So you can swab once and get both test results at same time. so far, my stud is l/L, so carrier, my one IPO 1 female is the same, and my other 4 bitches are all L/L, so not carriers of the gene. Hence can't/won't produce coated pups.

I haven't tested my male yet, put the $$$ toward DM and a full thyroid panel in addition to hips/elbows. He is WGSL so I would not be surprised if he carries it, though he doesn't have as full of a coat as some WGSL. He has siblings (litter) that are coats. I've always wanted to test but then there's another event I want to compete in or something wrong with the dog van....lol.

Didnt test my bitch, but her first litter, bred to stock coat, produced long coats. She is stock coat, so does that mean recessive for long coat?

I do - Scott von der Karl-May Hoehle cam back Carrier. also tested one of my females, carrier, too.
The did not produce any coated pups, litter of 3. Either would have been ok with me :)

Yes dmsharky, then your bitch would have to be a carrier of the LC gene since she produced some. Both parents would have to carry the recessive gene to produce coated pups.

I am impressed 40$ for a genetic test....so cheap ?. Wonder how they stay in business.

I was going to ask this question a few days ago and thought it might be controversial. Here in Australia it is not allowed but some are trying to have this decision reversed.
Would certainly be interested in testing my 2 younger bitches, I am thinking 1 will be a LSC carrier and the other not.
I personally would like to see stud owners testing but that probably won't happen but I would prefer to use a non carrier if the dog and his pedigree were what I was looking for.
