Are the pups orphans? If not, just let mom do the job. Weigh the pups daily to make sure they are thriving. If the litter is large, you may have to let the pups take turns nursing so everyone gets their fair share. If one pup isn't gaining, give it extra time on the nipple. If that still doesn't help, have a vet check it out. It could have something wrong with it. Couple of years ago, a friend had a pup with a cleft palate, which couldn't suckle properly. It had to be put to sleep.
