Good afternoon group;
I would like to begin an open dialog that will hopefully remain civil, polite, and be very informational.
After having working line sport dogs for several years, I have recently been toying with the idea of purchasing a showline bred female puppy to "play" with and learn from as well.
Thus, I begin my quest for knowledge...Of all the American kennels breeding West German showlines, which are the lines that tend to produce good working ability...on a regular basis, not just one or two...I mean actually consistently producing dogs that can HONESTLY do the work of the sport in a respectable manner? I would be more interested in contacting breeders who actually work and title/show their own dogs..those would be the most credible in my eyes..I don't know how much faith I can place in the breeder who simply purchases titled dogs, (or sends dogs for titling and showing etc). I would like to find a real "hands on" breeder, one who knows which end of the leash goes where, one who gets out and tracks the dog(s), does obedience, bitework etc. Once I find that breeder, I believe I will have a good place to start searching for a puppy.
Now, with that in mind, perhaps this breeder does not own the male, or in fact has not titled ALL the females they own etc..but I would like to find a breeder who HAS been out on the field, knows what it takes to make it to SchH3, FH etc..
With that all said, please feel free to post your recommendations for such breeders here, preferably with contact information so that I may contact them at my own leisure. I would post my email, but I don't want 500 emails with offers of dogs for sale ;)
So, which lines are bringing good solid temperment and nerve to the table as well as HEALTH, and of course, working ability? Which breeders are out there shedding blood, sweat and tears with the rest of the working crowds?
Location of the breeder within in the USA is not an issue, I have no problem flying out to meet the breeder and watch them work hands on..
I decided to post this request here, I have tried doing some online searching, but mostly come up with dead ends...just kennels full of titled dogs being bred, and nothing appears to be actually worked and trained by the breeder....I do know there ARE showlines out there that CAN in fact put in an honest days work and are consistently producing the same...so lets hear who they are!
Please don't start attacks, there are just as many "working line breeders" that also fall in this category as well. It is certainly a major trend in our country...buy titled dogs, POW, instant "breeder".
This is of course a topic all in it's own..not one I wish to address at this time, or in this thread.

Worth investigating steve house and especially the dog Indo Geesthügel an excellent worker, I cannot recall the kennel. I do not know them personally or have done any dealings, perhaps someone can help with contact information or experience.

I have bred and titled my own working and showlines. Plus I have titled import showline dogs. Dog training is dog training regardless of bloodlines, and the better training you do, the better the performance. That being said, I recommend you get a little older puppy that has already shown good nerve and drive for the sport. You can generally tell at a year of age, and this way you will also know that hips/elbows are OK, etc.
If you only want a puppy, I will privately refer you to someone who has titled her own dogs and is breeding for looks and workability. We do not have any puppies for you, so I'm not personally trying to sell you anything.

I have personally bred, raised, and trained 4 X BH; 3 X SchH1; 2 X SchH2; 1 X SchH3, as well as Breed Surveys (all class 1)for too many dogs to remember. (No trials on home fields--not by design, just practicality.) Of these dogs, one was USA Jugend Sieger, another was USA Junghund Sieger, another is both USA and WDA VA rated. In addition, VA-Utz v. Hirschel (2001 USA Sieger and 3 X VA-rated) and I trialed for 5 SchH 3 titles and an FH title, AFTER he was the USA Sieger. The scope of my breeding program has changed now. Most of my "keepers" are now titled by professionals either in the US or Germany. But all of them are prepared here in Western Pennsylvania. At last count, 26 dogs from my breeding program are titled and breed surveyed in class 1. One was VA rated in Switzerland, another VA in Korea. Some of these dogs are A students for the work, some are honest B students, some are underachieving C students (because they have other things to do with their lives).

Hi again all,
I guess I should have made my request a little more clear..
I am looking more towards the quality and ability of the _female_ side of the picture..it is pretty easy to find a good male of any type of lines, but good solid strong females are much more difficult.
I am also ONLY interested in dogs that are PROVEN, dogs that have progeny at least 2yrs of age or older out there..health is a HUGE concern, so I want an idea of what hips/elbows etc are being produced right along with temperment etc. Which lines are consistently producing these things?
I will be looking at females of ALL ages, from 8 week old puppy upwards. I have titled dogs from 0-SchH3 already, but they were from working lines, so I think I can select a dog/puppy with confidence, but I just need help in finding the good strong females out there!
My end goal will be to title and koer the female I end up with, and if all is packaged together just right, I'd like to try and play on the same fields as the workinglines as well. Not looking to win the Nationals..just be able to hold my head up with some pride at a Regional level, and perhaps something like the HOT tournament as well.
Hopefully this will help you all in pointing me in the right directions. I will be printing off this thread so that once I am able to narrow down the search, I'll have a good pile of material to reference.
Thank you again to all who have taken the time to reply thus far.
