Large breed mutt, 5.5 years old at the time of the x-ray. This is a digital photo of an analog x-ray, not a digital x-ray, so hopefully it is clear enough. Not submitted for OFA, just curious. Vet said no HD but the edges of the joint might get kind of rough as he ages and become arthritic. I am not concerned since this is seriously the laziest dog ever, he does not train or do sports and his idea of exercise is a 2 block walk maybe once a week. I try keep him lean as I do all my dogs, he's a few lbs overweight in my opinion (vet says he's fine which to me usually = fat, lol).

Same dog at 7.5 years, most recent photos (don't ask what he is, he's a mix of mixes)

He's fine...what does the vet mean "get kind of rough"? For 5.5 and his size...
Knees aren't rotated at all and kneecaps are way out to the side, so the right side of the screen looks a bit less round and smooth and pretty, but the socket is still nice and not at all what you see when a joint fits poorly and causes damage over time.
Is there a reason besides education that you posted these? Is he ok?

I guess the "ball" part of the joint might not be really smooth or might deteriorate over time, but the coverage is OK and they're in there pretty tight? I posted because on Sat. I had this dog at an event and some know it all kind of person came over and told me my dog looks like he's in pain and has HD. I said no he does not, I had him x-rayed and can prove he doesn't have HD (because I'm like that, x-ray all my dogs and do my competition dogs prelims and OFA or a-stamp even if not being bred). He does walk funny but I'm pretty sure it's because he's butt-high and his knees and hocks are really straight. He does look stiff when he walks but he has *always* walked like that. It just got me thinking about his x-rays and I didn't think I'd shared them before but I was sure I remembered that the vet said there's nothing to worry about, especially for a larger breed dog getting older that is barely active anyway. However, these were done by my regular vet, so may not be the greatest positioning and we all know how widely a normal vet's interpretation can vary!!
Funny my street bred mutt dog has nice hips, very healthy dog, nice bone, lovely feet, perfect teeth/bite....lol

Seriously, they look fine to me. Picture them rotated properly. He's huge and he's 5.5 and his hips look better than many 18 month olds we see. My Pit Bull walks stiffly. He is very muscular, and has very straight legs back legs. It's simple physics, to a degree. End of story. You're nicer than I am about that kind of thing. That drives me crazy when know-it-alls start talking about things they know nothing about when it pertains to MY dogs. I don't know what I'd even say to a comment like that. I wouldn't go so far as my son, who has actually (removed his thumb from his mouth), pointed at someone, and said "You know what your problem is? You're just a little bit stupid."
I was quite shocked. He was reprimanded, of course, but OMG...he was so right. So, I wouldn't say THAT, but I might make a comment about their x-ray vision. How does a dog "look" like they have HD? Ohhh, that drives me CRAZY!!!!

Thanks guys!
I also had someone PM me one time (on another forum, not dog related but there was a thread for sharing about your dogs) and tell me my dog (my first little working line bitch, the dog in my avatar here) needed a TPLO because in one picture she was sitting crooked. WTF?
