Hello! I have been searching for a GSD for 5 years and have not found the one that is in my head. I'm looking for an old style female breeding quality puppy that has a satriaght back, no excessive slope to hindquarters, and more of a square build (though she should be slightly longer than tall). I prefer a deep red/black color and a typey head. Her disposition should be excellent and not ScH. oreinted. I want to do obedience, tracking, rally, and therapy work with her. I do have a small child so being a family dog will be the most important thing. She should track up straight and move straight without winging or paddling. She should have a strong play drive without being hyper. Lastly, she should have OFA Hips and Elbows for at least 3 generations (prefer CHIC health clearances) and come with a health guarantee. Can ANYBODY direct me to some suitable breeders (who puppy temperament test, are reputable, and experienced)? The ones I have found that advertise old style GSDs produce dogs that are far to large (in my opinion) and most do not have working titles. I hope I am not asking for too much! LOL Thank you in advance for all your help!

Smiley, After reading your post, to me you are describing a typical Shiloh Shepherd. I dont know if you have ever heard of them but they are German Shepherds, just more of the old style looking like you said. They come in long and short coat, but I see alot more Plush coat than anything else. You could try looking for some breeders, but I think it is going to be hard to try and find a breeder that actually works their dogs. I dont know of any personally and have never owned one but from what I heard they are very friendly and people oriented. Good luck with your search :). Andrea

Isn't a "Shiloh Shepherd" a mix breed dog of a malamute and GSD? and not even a GSD? Not even a purebred dog?

by GSDandrea on 22 January 2007 - 22:01

gsdlvr2, I really dont know. There is one at my dog park and he looks like a purebred long haired GSD with a stright back. Like I said I have never owned one so I am not 100% familiar with the breed, although they seem like very nice temperment dogs.

Smiley, Click on my name to the left of your title "Please help me locate a GSD" email me from there or type in echomeadowsheps@aol.com I have a female, not one of my dogs, one I purchased from a gal down the road nice male and I really liked the pups as pups, But feel they will not work in our breeding program, I don't like the super flat back personally. Not much Sch training, what was done was done when she was young, she showed little interest ! a very good start in obedience, Very nice temperament, flat backed as you like, not a very large dog, Excellent with kids, not a high drive, just nice and mellow, housetrained, cratetrained, current on all vaccines, de-worming, flea tick prevention. Anyway we have her for sale and her sister. I'll be happy to email you some photos. if you like, The price on this dog is Very reasonable I just want to find nice homes for these girl, there are two of them, they are sisters, one is Black and Red, the other is Black and Tan both are yearlings in february. from your description the black and tan female(her name is trace) might be just what your looking for. Dam and Sire OFA Good Certs on both.

I know a breeder in Tulsa who may have a dog that would fit. This dog is from her own breeding and they always breed for health and temprement first and foremost. The dogs all compete in schutzhund, agility and obedience, some are titled and some are not but all have hip and health certifications. E-mail me if interested. Lorri

I also know of a breeder who has a litter available. They also do Schutzhund with their dogs. They breed first and foremost for health, and temperament also. The hips and elbows are x-rayed and are OFA Certified. The best thing to do is talk to a few breeders, and if possible, go to see the parents of the pups. You can also e-mail me! Dawn Bonome

Shiloh Shepherd is a different breed than a GSD. They are considered a "giant" and most will reach about 150lbs and have the shorter life span that goes with the size (8-9yos). The gene pool is still fairly small for Shiloh's and they are fighting some health issues (all the same we fight)because of that. Finding a decent one is very difficult. Since Smiley stated that most of the females she's seen are too large, I don't think a shiloh would be a good choice. I'm sure some of the other folks on this board can recommend a breeder with dogs that fit the type and GSD standard she's looking for. :)
