Hello, I think my 7 week old golden retriever puppy swallowed a beer cap. I dropped the cap, turned around to pick it up, and it was gone! She's been hacking, but nothing has come out.  This happened last night around 5pm. I fed her about 8 of the 100% cotton balls soaked in heavy cream, a few more this morning, and again a few more in the evening right before dinner. She's been active and bouncy like her normal self, but would periodically dry heave, though it's reduced quite a bit. It's now 6pm the day after the incident and I still hear her heaving a little bit. Is the metal bottle cap passing and when should I expect it to come out? I've been monitoring her poop all day and she's pooped 3 times, with less and less poop each time. In the last session, only a tiny droplet came out. Should I be worried? Any advice? Thanks so much in advance.

Take dog to vet and get X-ray, the rough edge of a metal cap can cut up the intestines and will most likely cause a blockage where the small intestine meets the large intestine. (Everything i've ever seen come out of a dog with a blockage was stuck there.)
Do this ASAP! I lost a dog to this sort of blockage 2 years ago. Expect to pay for surgery if the cap has not passed the bottleneck between the small and large intestine.
Hope you pup is ok.

Take your pup to a vet asap. Do not wait

If she were older, I'd be comfortable continuing to do the cotton ball & cream process, but at just seven weeks of age, I'm with Dragonfry on this--the chances of the cap causing a blockage are too great in a pup that small.  An x-ray is needed ASAP, and surgery may well be necessary.

Yes, agree with other posters, please, get her to your vet.  She is too young to take
a chance with.   Best of luck.  [ Do let us know the outcome.]

I"m always amazed when people post here instead of going straight to the vet.

Seems obvious that the holiday ER trip would be expensive and inconvenient. With the vet trashing that goes on here, they probably think they are doing the right thing asking the well meaning experts, here, for advice.

I imagine you have the benefit of claiming vet expenses as part of your breeding business, Sitasmom.  This person probably just wanted to determine how serious the situation was, since they lacked your vast knowledge base.

I also imagine the pup is at the vets right now, and I do hope the pup is okay.

Beetree  so I take it TURKEY did not agree with you so well;  why don't you try NOT TALKING DOWN to people and maybe you day will be a little better...Wink Smile

Nan, that is very interesting you chose to read my post with such a tone in your head. And you also failed to note who really was being condescending. I am sure The OP might prefer my post to Sitasmom's?

Hope they return with good news on the pup, and settle this for us?
