I often wonder, as we freely bandy about the accusation of Troll, what it is
exactly  that equates with Trollish behaviour.

Today I just learned that a poster who I have had precisely ONE contact with
(and that was just defending her son against a possibility of being accused as
'wet behind the ears'),  that she had permanently blocked PMs from me from six
months ago.  Because she did not like some of my posts to others.

What's more, she says there are several people she has blocked on that same
basis.  Probably, like me until today, they have no idea that this is the case.

Would never occur to me to block random people cos I don't agree with / like
what they say !   Realise there's nothing to stop her doing it;  but it still strikes
me as very odd.

How would others feel about that ?  What is your pet hate in ludicrous, Trollish actions ?

I've heard people called Trolls for numerous reasons but the following definition is pretty accurate IMO:

troll (/ˈtrl/, /ˈtrɒl/) is a person who sows discord on the Internet by starting arguments or upsetting people,[1] by posting inflammatory,[2] extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community (such as a forum, chat room, or blog), either accidentally[3][4] or with the deliberate intent of provoking readers into an emotional response[5] or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.[6]

definition for Troll?  They live under a bridge and cause trouble.  What not the one you were looking for?
seriously though If someone blocks you for such silly reasons, Its kind of their problem.  That particular person is losing out on good advice and knowledge from many.  Look at it this way,  at least that is one less person to waste you time when they wouldn't value your knowledge and advice.

Thanks Reggie;  I'm mindful of the fact that, as Mountain Lion quotes,
she may have had the deliberate intent of provoking us (on her list) into
'an emotional response'.

[The joke is that I (personally, can't speak for others) would probably have
been gentler with her in a 1-2-1 PM than I had been on posts on the thred
that exposed her action, but of course she could not know that, having
prevented me from PMs.]

I remain secure in the comforting knowledge that I have a LOT of nice PMs
from folk who have appreciated the help I've given them over the past couple
of years.  So my posts can't ALL be all that negative and aggressive !

ML That Wiki definition is more or less what I always understood a Troll was;
however it seems to me that a lot wider definitions get used, e.g. on this Forum,
so I'm curious to add to it, if posters can identify other behaviours.

I'm with Blitzen, that poster is stuck up. He needs to shut up and listen.

Bee, can you expand that one a bit ?

LOL@Hundmutter

What don't you understand about my comment? It wasn't directed at any one in particular.

If you are just wanting to understand why someone would block you as a matter of form when entering new forums, it really wouldn't apply. I keep toying with the idea to PM dwilliams myself, just to see if I'm blocked. LOL But then I stop myself because I have to wonder—

If a Poster is blocked from sending PM's and they never ever send a PM, did the blocking poster really block that sending Poster?
