does anybody have any tips on removing a tick from a dog that struggles when you try to hold it still? 2 people try to get the job done but she keeps moving around.

Soak the tick where it is connected with Camphor.  This draws the head out and makes it easier to remove.  There are also chemical baths that can kill off the ticks; Adams name brand works pretty good.

There is a pill called CAPSTAR. It starts killing ticks and fleas within 45 minutes.

Jyl, Capstar only works on fleas. It has no affect on ticks. Amatraz is the product that works best on ticks as it paralyzes their mouth parts preventing them from biting and feeding. Amatraz usually comes in a tick collar. (Tick Arrest is the brand name)
Spraying the tick with Adams flea and tick spray will usually kill it pretty quickly and then it will come out easily. I use forceps or tweasers and pull the tick gently as close to the head as possiable.
Ticks seriously gross me out.

okay, we gave her a bath with hartz flea and tick shampoo but could only remove about half a tick that died with it's jaws stuck in her and she won't stay still while we try to get it off. this is a 60 pound shepherd. she is my boyfriend's dog and she flips out when i try to hold her while he tries to get it out with the tweezers. i don't have that problem with my 2 gsd's but she gets really jumpy when we try getting ticks out.

don't use tweezer...try the tick twister, it looks like a scoop with a cut in the middle or the tick lasso, though the lasso has a bit of a learning curve. I use both, though my preference for the nymphs is the tick lasso, they slide through the scoop, if not sufficiently engorged.

The product Dragonfry is referring to is the Preventic collar with Amitraz, and depending on where you are, it might or might not work. I have used it for years in DC/MD/VA area, never had any issues, until last year my dog got Lyme with the Preventic on. We would find live, fully engorged ticks on the floor...I spoke to Virbac ( the manufacturer of preventic) on several occassions and it seemed they were getting similar reports from other people. I switched to frontline (not the combo, just fipronil) and so far I have not seen any ticks...though this year there are fewer ticks than last.

If you do find a fully engorged tick and you live in TBD endemic area, I personally would test the tick, JMO.

i would love to know how to calm her, guess i should have just said, how do i calm her? she struggles, my boyfriend gets mad, yells at me to hold her, i try holding her, he is yelling so i feel frustrated, she probably picks up on it, then i don't feel like even trying at all.
i do remember that scoop like tick remover thing, saw a picture somewhere, and i do order things on amazon, very useful tip there :-)

Put her in a down and give her treats while you are petting every part of her body.  Her being in a down while being touch needs to be a great experience.  She should quickly see that as a good thing, then you can work on her.

Also, hertz is not really a good product in general.  If you are going to use over the counter chemicals, Adams is a better brand.  Costs more, but it does the job the 1st time.
