Hip and elbow x rays of a 2 year old bitch, taken a day after her second birthday

by Nans gsd on 11 October 2013 - 23:10

Hips look good;  not sure about elbows as I do not have enough experience to give an opinion.  Sorry.  Nan

Hips are tight. Coverage is good. I might see some "medusa" on the right hip indicative of some remodeling. It does appear that the right neck isn't as distinctive as the left.

Elbows..............hard to say what OFA will say about elbows, as they're less consistent than they are w/hips. I do see some things they may not like, though I'm hardly enough of an expert to say for sure.  They're not flexed enough, either, though I doubt OFA will send them back for that. :-(  I hope I'm wrong!

Did you submit?

I did indeed submit.  All the people that have looked at her x rays so far have said that they'd be surprised if her hips didn't go excellent, and her elbows should go normal.

I did not and will not make any guesses as to what the OFA gods will say. It's not a high contrast x-ray so it's hard to say, but if I tilt my monitor I see what appears to be a second line (jellyfish shape, "medusa") on the right hip. Not saying it's enough to make them not pass them, just saying what I see.

As I said, on elbows....it's anybody's guess how they're grading that day. The recent ones I've seen pass had zero shadowing anywhere and the ones everyone thought were great were graded Grade 1 DJD.

Here are normal elbows- no shadows. Sorry they're small, but see how clean the "notch" is? Now look at the last pic of hers and see that fuzziness? I've seen some lately that had less than that fail. Fingers crossed I'm wrong and they'll pass with flying colors! The rest of the elbows looks good and as I said, hips are tight with good coverage.

My favorite elbow article regarding Grade 1 DJD (WHICH I AM NOT SAYING SHE HAS!!) It's just a really comprehensive look at elbow grading.  http://www.ridgebackregister.com/images/RR_11Sp_Elbow_Debate_singles.pdf

Yes, that fuzziness on the lower leg bone (ulna) should not be there.

I see nothing at all wrong with the hips except the neck of the left femur is thicker than the right. I don't see how this will cause a problem, though, as the hips are very well seated in the sockets.

Well, we'll see what happens :)  Hopefully she'll pass elbows.

Very, very nice hips and elbows,I would say good at least / I wouldn´t be suprised if they are graded even excellent/ for hips and normal for elbows.

Good on hips. The elbows make me a tad nervous, for the same reasons Jenni posted.

There is nothing "wrong" with the hips. They couldn't be any tighter and the coverage is good. But there is a difference from right to left that OFA may or may not decide to take issue with. I've seen DDR dogs w/very thick femoral necks just because it's their conformation get graded lower due to the lack of clear definition between neck and head. I think a dog with only one side like that is even less likely to get that overlooked as conformation, so I would be quite surprised if they graded those hips excellent for that reason. That second line is wear.  But it all depends on who's sitting on that panel that day!
