How about Hideyoshi after the great Samurai Toyotomi Hideyoshi. It's pronounced Hid-Dee-Yo-She. A little long, but you could shorten it to Hide or Yoshi.

I've always been partial to the name Hondo... He was a character in a Louis L'Amour Book and I think they made a movie out of it :)

Go with Herman, it will make your German relatives and judges smile. I think it means "soldier" and is a good description of a GSD. It sounds funny at first, but I loved my GSD named "Herman." Everyone loved the name much more than they loved the dog as he was very intimidating. How about Hercules?
"Hummer" LMAO!
