Hi,

My 6 month old has a rash around his surgery site. I am not sure what it is, but am hoping for opinions. I have sent pictures to his vet via email, but they have not gotten back to me yet. Any ideas? Should I be concerned?

If it's dry, not itching, and not spreading, I'd say it's clipper rash that is healing. The next thing that will happen is the brown stuff (which is likely scabs) will fall off and everything will be back to normal.

If there were something bad there, I'd expect to see red or pink skin, or maybe pustules/pimples.

Thanks for the reply...he has been itching it, but that seems to be decreasing. It does seem like scabs but I just was not sure. It is dry and doesn't seem to be spreading. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully the vet will get back to me tomorrow. Just wanted to be sure there wasn't need for immediate action.

Agree w/SS. I even see a clipper line or two in there. If you want to be really safe and if you're worried about possible infection, spray it with Vetericyn.

In my last post about him itching his surgery site(prior to the rash showing up) someone else had mentioned the Vetericyn also. I was going to wait until his stitches were removed to use anything.  He still has his stitches in until next Saturday. The vet said not to get them wet or apply anything to the stitches, but the rash is a little distance away from them. Would you still advise even with stitches, or should I just hold off?

The tiny bit of moisture in the spray isn't going to hurt anything. In nursing, we clean the incision line with normal saline (salt water) every time we do a dressing change. It's just prolonged moisture, such as would result from the dog licking the area that you want to avoid, as it softens the skin and can cause the stitches to pull out. Or the dog might pull them out...
