Hi,
Honest opinions needed. How is this pedigree in 'hopes' of getting a strong personal protection male from?

sire : Halk Vom Grafental , Hip  90th (0.29 /0.24)

dam: Funny vom Grafental , Penn Hip  90th %  left hip 0.30 / right hip 0.26   DM Tested clear

Thank you for your valuable knowledge!

Ummm...define "strong" first of all. Everyone wants something different.

Probably good healthy dogs, may have some defense (East German dogs can often have an "edge" to them...there are some high profile names in there as well), may be good candidates for training, or may be more on the side of pets- strong deterrents, quite possibly. Strong enough to fight and stop someone with intent to do you harm? Dunno. You'd have to meet and test the parents to guess that. What does the breeder or owner say about them? And do they live with them or what do they do with them to evaluate their temperament? Are they kennel dogs w/little to no interaction, or are they interacted with regularly in different scenarios so the breeder or owner gets a good idea of strengths and weaknesses? Again "personal protection" is sooo subjective. Please tell us more about what you want the dog to do, specifically.

Here, I made the pedigree a link for you: http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/breeding.result?father=696555&mother=673905

Thanks Jenni78. Strong, something that will stand up between us and the 'bad guy'. He will be trained. What lines do I work for?? Thanks!

Any dog is only as good as the training you have at your disposal, especially if you are new to that type training. I must warn you that you will be up against a good dose of dislike for the East German dogs; there is a bias against them, deserved or not. If you have a trainer in mind, ask them how they feel about them. If the trainer is down on the dog before ever meeting the dog, you're not going to be very successful.

if you're looking for that and hoping to get it in a puppy, just save yourself the trouble and go find it in a dog.  Then you know you have it, regardless of what the pedigree says it should have

zdog, A finished dog is out of the budget.

Jenni78, I thought the East German lines are the desired ones for personal protection?

You don't necessarily need a "finished" dog. Just a dog old enough to be tested for potential. What's your budget? I don't know who has those dogs, but most of the breeders breeding those lines are charging $2500 or so...and for that, you can find a young adult or older pup that you can get a better idea about as far as temperament. If you just want a puppy and hope to be able to do some PPD training in the future but won't be devastated if not, by all means, buy a puppy.

Jenni78, the pup is 6 months and has been tested and seems a good prospect for what we want. I also wanted some bias opinions on the lines as well.

sorry, I should have clarified.  It doesn't have to be finished.  Jenni explained it already.  a puppy with a pedigree is tough.  They might be ok, but still might not be what you want.  For me, I don't care.  I just like to stack the deck and then go train.  We'll see how they turn out.  If I knew I needed a certain set of traits, I'd go looking for a dog with those traits and skip the puppy stuff.
