The other day during aggitation my young male started doing something new. He would be facing up to the helper in full bark, then he would scratch the ground with his front feet like he was marking. He never lost eye contact with the helper or stopped barking while he did it. He did not continuously scratch, either after the helper stole the sleeve or after the sleeve had been kicked back to the helper, when the helper would reengage.
The helper said it looked like a bull getting ready to charge.
I have asked a few people and most had never seen a dog do that before. The one that had, the dog was one of his males.
Has anyone seen this before? Any clues as to the meaning behind it?
Thank you.

Leaking, overly stressed perhaps?

Yes, I work a dog that does this in SchH. He will scratch the ground much like a bull getting ready to charge.

No he is not peeing. Ears are up, tail is up and he is full forward.

NOT peeing, leaking as in leaking drive...that was great...

I have never heard leaking drive before. The only time I have heard leaking is in reference to submissive peeing.

LOL, that was funny. Can you post a pedigree? Can you describe your dog's temperament? Is you dog higher in prey or defense? Any videos?

It is sign of male dominance. It is part of the defense drive. This is my territory. It is a part of display of power, size together whith making itself bigger by standing taller, growling and barking with deeper voice then is normal, hackles up and so on. It is an atavistic display which since it is not important in breeding of dogs today it is then disappearing and thus it is not seen that often. It is coming from past generations where such display, let say in wolfs, was important part of the dominance and pre-aggression ritual. Many other animals do that with front feet wile facing each other or rare feet when they just mark the territory - often associated with marking - spraying of urine. In that case I think it is to stir up the ground to activate the bacteria which will then decompose the spray and other bacteria scent of the dog and create characteristic odor which is like a fingerprint.

Thank you Prager Hans.
Slamdunc- During agitation, even under pressure or working civilly, he does not show defensive body language, his ears are forward, tail is up, pulling forward into the leash. Never do his ears go back, nor do his teeth show while barking. He has good solid ball drive. When not working he is a pretty mellow guy. He is a dominant male, always pushing his boundaries.
Someone was taking video, but has not sent it to me.
