This actually happened to my first GSD, 8 rabies vacs in 7 years, dead from lymphosarcoma at 7 1/2 after a lifetime of allergies and chronic bacterial infections. Vet still said he needed annual rabies vacs. I should have known better.

You are preaching to the choir, here, Blitzen! I have a family member who was recently diagnosed with ALS . . shortly after getting a flu shot the symptoms started! Coincidence? Let's just say I am not gonna get a flu shot. The Gardasil vaccine for HPV is now thought to have caused ALS in a few teenagers . . . I have a horse that developed uveitis that a specialist thought may have been triggered by the multiple vaccinations he got in a boarding barn for several years.

I stopped flu shots a few years back after I got a really painful reaction at the site of the injection. I couldn't use that arm for 4 weeks. I once sold a puppy to a young family, the father suffered from guillain-barré syndrome a few weeks after receiving a flu vac. He never fully recovered. 30 years old and wheel chair bound for life due to a flu shot. The manufacturer of that vac supported his family and a gag order issued.
Most dogs are probably not going to be negatively effected by over vaccinating, but why continue to vaccinate if it's not necessary and, as far as know, there is no way to identify those dogs that will suffer from too many vacs. I'll err on the side of caution and not vaccinate my 5 year old anymore.

Yes! Neither of my vets are in favor of annual vaccines. They do rabies every three years because it is the law. As for the other vaccines, one vet vaccinates puppies and maybe she gives vaccines again at a year (can't remember), but never again after that. My other vet vaccinates puppies and again at one year and after that, every three to four years. One vet told me the biggest problem is educating clients because we have been brainwashed into thinking getting our pets vaccinated annually makes us good and responsible pet owners. Although they try to educate their clients, many are too frightened to go without vaccinating. One vet refuses to give vaccinations to older dogs, even if the pet owner insists. She said in all good conscience she cant do it.
BTW, I have never gotten a flu shot and I don't know that I ever will. It is so sad to hear of those with ALS and other illnesses as a result of vaccinations.

Nope no flu shots for me; my mom got Phenomia after receiving a flu shot (sorry SP) my spell check does not work. As for the dogs after their initial series then at 18-24 months old I am going to be done for life; of course law says Rabies. But neither were given to my seniors either. So there you have it. Jean Dodds has current shot protocal on her site for anyone's review if you have any questions or problems with new vaccine protocal.
With my GSD boy having DM, Pannus and a crappy neuter coat, the less I give from now on the better. All from auto immune related diseases and was allergic to Keflex.??

A holistic vet explained to me that, when you vaccinate, you are trying to prevent an acute illness (that you may or may not ever contract), but the trade off is that you will impact your immune system, which may render you vulnerable to other illnesses. I have never gotten a flu shot . . during flu season I try to avoid crowds, public bathrooms, movie theaters, etc. -- I realize not everyone can do that. But you can avoid handling the door knob when you enter or leave a public restroom . . . use a tissue or a paper towel!

Reading articles like this worries me some. I’m picking up my German shepherd puppy next Friday. He will be 7 weeks old. He will be getting his first round of Vaccinations the same day I bring him home. In my area Parvo is extremely high and he needs his Vaccinations. My vet told me to bring him in 2 more times after his first set of shots 3 weeks apart.

One should get the initial set, just the "core" vaccinations (DHPP) and then rabies 3 yearly after that. Some kennels demand bordetella and some flu vaccinations. Less is better.
The Amer.Veter.Assoc has some googleable guidelines...they are written so that the non-professional will have difficulty understanding them. Best is to ask only the "core" vaccinations per vet assoc.

Hennessy, According to Dr. Dodds, a puppy should not get the Distemper (MLV) vaccine before 8 weeks of age because it can have numerous side effects if given too young. She recommends the first set of puppy vaccines to be given at nine to ten weeks. Please look at Dr. Dodds protocol and if your vet won't agree to it find another vet who will. Since you have a high incidence of parvo in your area ask the breeder if he/she will keep the pup another week or more, so you can get the pup vaccinated when he is at the age where the vaccines will be safer for him.
